If you apply more than about 75 or 80 pounds of nitrogen per acre you snould plow It down. These rates of applyiniT nitrogen in actual nitrogen.

It would take nearly 300 poimds of ammonium nitrate to make 100 pounds of nitroger or 500 pounds of nitrate of soda. Heavy applications of fertilizer are recommended for permanent pastures too. An initial application of 400 to 600 pounds per acre of 0-20-0 or 0-20-10 with repeat applications every second or third year. 200 to 300 pounds of 0-10-20 or 0-12-12 or similar analysis is recommended for hay fields that arc to be left for year. grood time to pnt this fertilizer on is just after you cut your hay.

These are not all of the recommendations included in the fertilizer bulletin but they give you an idea of how far we hAve already gone in increasing rates of fertilizer applications. Economists estimate that in the next year or so farmers will be squeezed a little between higher costs and somewhat lower prices. Ferilizetr applications to increase yields may provide a part of the answer. Get TasXei Soil Test Results CASTMUK Feed dairy cattle and heifers well, so they will develop into large, strong animals. Thousands of dairy heifers are stunted annually by poor feeding. Farmers will get results from soil tests almost three times faster now than in March and April, Ray A.

Linville, chemist in charge of the soil inventory laboratory at Ohio State University, states. "December, January and February are the slack months in the soil inventory laboratory," Linville added, "March and April, sample volume is normally three times greater than, now." Laboratory workers tested 318 samples in December, 1950, and 944 last December. In Marca and 1951. they tested 1.892 and 1.386 samples respectively. Last March brought more than 2,000 soil samples to the laboratory.

There were more than 1,800 in April, 1952. Linville said the laboratory finishes testing samples about three weeks after they come in during March. "Samples sent in late cannot be completed in timp for corn planting in early May," he added. County agricultural agents' offices can supply farmers with complete information on the correct method of getting a soil sample. Full Lino of PILLSBURY KASCO LUCKY STRIKE FEEDS R.

Did you every stop to consider how far we have come in the application of commercial fertilizer in the last 15 years? I imagine I would have been called pretty radical if I suggested to anyone that they apply 600 pounds of fertilizer per acre for corn, or 400 to 500 pounds on wheat in 1937. A sack to the acre was more or less the stand- a application then. Now agronomists m- mend regularly the larger fig- Harold Ruggles ures. Why. Because they and the farmers have found that the larger amounts will increase yields enough to hot only pay for the fertilizer but also to leave a nice little margin for the grower.

I am not at all sure we have reached the ceiling yet as far as the amount of fertilizer we can profitably apply to crops. The 1952 Ohio fertilizer recommendations bulletin suggests 400 4Q pounds 4-16-8, 4-12-8 or 5-10-10, for example. 3-12-12 or 3-18-9 is recommendable for normal conditions, and 0-20-10 or 0-12-12 for productive soils. For com the same bulletin recommends 300 to 400 pounds of fertilizer in the row where its checked or drilled. The bulletin then suggests additional applications of nitrogen either broadcast before plowing and plowed dnwn or as a sidiedressing for the corn after it is growing.
