While numerous shares held at Saturday's final levete. gains of fractions to a point were fairly well distributed near the second hour. Dealings were negligible. Inclined to edge upward were Douglas Aircraft, Boeing. United Aircraft. Glenn Martin. U.S. Steel, Chrysler. U.S. Rubber, N.Y. Central. Great Northern, General Steel Castings pfd Anaconda arid International Nickel. Backward were American Telephone, Consolidated Edison and North American. " ' Selective improvement appeared in the bond division. Commodities were mixed. Little speculative .. inspiration was found in the war news, brokers said, and such . nibbling a came into stocks was attributed mainly to bullishness concerning the domestic business scene. TORONTO. TORONTO. Sept. 30. (CP.) The stock market rounded out the mouth In decidedly quiet action with prices showing littie. or any, net cnange in the average from Saturday's close. Only fi. 000 chares changed hands in the first hour and the turnover was a lfttle heavier in the second hour. Kerr-Addison and MacLeod-Cockshutt were the most active oi the golds and they added a cent or two. Kerr welling at 2.70 and MacLeod at 2.51. Malartlo Gold Fields. Chesterville and Hedley Mascot were firmer spots lu the cheaper gold group. Senior golds were out of the picture. The base metal share market was as dull as the golds with Steep Bock down 3 cents to 1.45, Suoelters to 36 and Chromium j to 17. Noranda was un changed at 56' for broken lots. Dominion Woolens Pfd. was In de mand and the price firmed a point to S1 j. Easy Washer was another gainer in the miscellaneous Industrial list. Maple Lea; Milling Pfd. and Kelvinator were soft. The Canadian Steamship Lines Issues Icet ground in broken lot trades, steels were steady and dull and the senior oi.: were unchanged but for a gain of 'Vpoint for British American. OP R. sold at 5, unchanged. Few western oils appeared In the morning action. Home Oil sold at $2 up a cent, and Pacalta firmed V to 4'. The bid was stronger for Pacific Pete at 29. MONTREAL. Montreal Power, only trader In utill-ute, tckc on V point at 30 but Im- fr rial Oil slipped a similar amount to l',4- In constructions, an odd lot transaction on General Steel Wares advanced 4 but; Dominion Bridge, also in odd lots, sold off the same amount. Asbestos and an odd lot of Smelters showed no change. Papers and rails laued to appear on the list. Distillers Seagrams found some support and gilned , point but Massey-Harrls back d also. Grass calves and hogs were f a shade easier . while other classes of livestock held steady ln early trade on Montreal livestock mar kets today, according to the Dominion Department of Agriculture. Receipts: Cattle 1.311. calves 3.285, sheep 2.850, hogs 1,979. - Cows were the first to sell and these brought $5.75 for good kinds. $4.73-$5.23 for mediums, and $4-$4.50 for common kinds. Canners and cutters were $2 50-$3.75. Odd steers sold at S8-S8 50 for good kinds and $6.50 for mediums. There were not enough early sales of steers to establish prices. Veal calves were strong and grassers were 25 cent or more lower. Good veals made $10-$10.50 with few tops up to $11. Medium kinds sold up to $10 with common light veals down to $8. Drinkers were $S.SO-$7.50. Grasners were slow and easier, selling from $4-$4.8S witn the bulk between $4.50-$4.75. Lambs were steady to a shade higher in spots. Good ewes brought $8.50- $8.75 with most sales at $8.50. Culls and bucks were cut $2 per cwt. Sheep were $3-$5 with a w yearlings up to so ana witn tne bulk of the sales be tween $4. $5. Quebec province is count ing on the newly-developed northwestern district to restore it to the front position it held in Confederation, Premier Adelard Godbout said in an address here Saturday night in the course of his tour through Abitibl and Terniscamin- gue counties. "The northwest with its agricul ture and mines will return us to this position in the concert of Canadian provinces," said Mr. Godbout who officiated last Friday at opening ceremonies of the new Maniwaki-Mont Laurier-Senne-terre highway which forms direct road links between Hull ana Mont real and northwestern Quebec. Stressing that construction of the new highway was no sign of hostility towards . "the neighboring province," he said Quebec wished to co-operate with all the prov inces which were "sisters," all responsible for Canada's greatness. Rockcliffc Car Barns The Rockclifle car barns of the Ottawa Electric Railway, substantial brick barns just north of Princess Louise avenue, are to be demolished according to David Gill, general manager of the com pany. Demolition will start tomor row. The contract for the work has been let to Baker Brothers. Part of the barns was destroyed some years ago when fire swept through the building. Subse quently the remaining barns were used for storage space. It has long been felt that the barns consti tuted somewhat of an eyesore arl in order to co-operate with the Federal District Commission the O.E.R. has decided to remove them. MRS. JOHN' COOrER Mrs. John Cooper, 203 Fifth avenue, a native oi iwornsourg and a resident of the Capital since 1901. died this morning at a local hospital in her 67th year. Mrs. Cooper, the former Mary Jane Fisher, was born at Morris- burg . in 1874. She received her education at Iroquois. Ont.. and 50 years ago married John Cooper. The couple moved to Ottawa shortly after the great fire in 1901. Mr. Cooper died ln February of this year. Surviving are three sons. Arling ton and Mac of Ottawa and Jack: of Los Angeles, Cal.: three daugh ters. Mrs. Claude Rupert of Ottawa. Mrs. Charles Low, Toronto, and Miss Greta Cooper. Ottawa; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Hogg.
