THE DEMOCRAT, Wednesday, June 27,1973 75 years ago Archbisop confirms 174 at St. Mary's church 10 YEARS AGO 1963 More than two hundred REA officials, members of the media, including TV men' were flown to Bismarck, N.D., and taken by bus to the site of the new 200,000 TV station to be built for the Basin Power Electric coop where it was planned to burn lignite coal. The plant site was a couple of miles from the Missouri river and only 15 miles south of the great Missouri river reservoir at Garrison N.D. Mrs. C.W.

Pitts of LeMars, the former Hester Carter of Rock Valley, passed away She was born at Orange City Sept. 4,1886, was a graduate of Grinnell College in 1907, resigned her post as women's physical education director at Carleton college to go to Shanghai, China, to teach in a normal school for Chinese girls under the auspecies of the YWCA. Areas in the west and north of Sioux county were badly in need of rain. Adequate moisture was reported for the eastern half of the county. Funeral services were at Bejou, for William Veen, 81, former Alton resident, who died June 13.

He was born in the Netherlands Feb. 17, 1882. At Orange City, Judith Rae Post and Frederick N. Verdoorn were married. In Omaha, June 22, Marilyn Penning of Granville and Martin Champion of Omaha were united in marriage.

25 YEARS AGO 1948 Heavy rains deluges northwest Iowa, with 4.32 inches since June 11, breaking a lone dry spell. Two great and dearly beloved pioneers of the area south of Ruisch and Nick Ruppert, passed away. Mr. Ruisch widely known thresherman, was born at Pella March 12, 1869. Mr.

Ruppert, a highly regarded retired farmer, was born in the duchy of Luxembourg, Europe, Oct. 25, 1870. While visiting in the Pacific northwest, Dr. Wm. Doornink landed a 32-lb.

salmon and "Deke" Klay had to be satisfied with a 24-lb. one. William Vrieze, popular Alton citizen, died suddenly from a heart attack. He was born at Alton July 3, 1883. 50 YEARS AGO 1923 Dr.

Arnold F. Pins, who grew up at Alton, was opening a dental practice in Oak Park, Land near Alton, comprising the Jan Muyskens estate, was sold at auction, the price fqr the 344.26 acres averaging $207.50. The route of primary road 10 from Alton to Granville was still undetermined. Mrs. Catherine Schnee, 85, of Alton died June 24.

Catherine Eulberg was born June 17, 1838, in Mendt Province, Nassau, coming to the U.S. with her parents in 1854. She and her husband and family moved to Sioux county in 1876. At Sioux Center, drillers for a new town well hit a fine flow of water at a depth of 390 feet but coming from a sand strata so fine that the screen could not hold it back. 75 YEARS AGO 1898 A political bomb shell exploded at the Republican Congressional convention held in LeMars when Judge Lot Thomas of Storm Lake was nominated for congress over Geo.

Suckow of Hawarden had tendered his resignation as pastor of the Congr church there and had accepted a similar position at Algona, Iowa. The Rev. James F. Hulst, 75, of La Platta Avenue, Riverside, Sioux City, died on June 12th after a lingering illness, at the Green Acre Home at South Nebraska City. Funeral services were held on June 15th at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Mr. and Mrs.
