Wheeler, 67, said declining health and his age were major factors in his decision for leaving the post he has held since 1946.

He did say, however, that he will remain with the team in advisory capacity to Watkins. Watkins played for Wheeler in the early 1970s and was a member of Alabama State's only NCAA playoff team in school history. "I've been considering retiring for the last two years," said Wheeler Monday. "I have a heart condition, but it was a hard decision to make." Watkins, a native of Thomasville, played at Selma University two years before transferring to Alabama State. He played center field for two seasons and helped lead the team into the 1974 NCAA playoffs.

He was named as an assistant coach in 1975 and has served in that capacity since. "I feel really great about it," said Watkins. been working hard and our team has been working hard. Actually, it will be basically the same system we've used. Coach has done a great job and we'll still be under his leadership.

Things will basically be the same." Wheeler, a native of Memphis, came to Alabama State in the late 1930s. He played baseball one season before the school and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dropped the sport. He then turned to the Negro Leagues and played for the Memphis Red Sox and the Claybrook (Ark.) Tigers during the summer months. During Lowe's six years at LBW, almost 40 of his former players have signed scholarships to play baseball at four-year colleges and universities more than any team in the southeastern area. Four others signed professional contracts.

Lowe, whose record at LBW is 144-85 (.750 percent), was an All-American pitcher at Auburn University in 1966, and was also an All-Southeastern Conference selection in 1966 and again 1967. He went on to serve eight years with the Chicago Cubs, either as a player or a coach and once served as assistant under the great Leo Durocher. Lowe, a one-time Montgomery resident, has spent the last four summers helping the Oneonta club to four straight New York-Penn League pennants. The club currently carries five Montgomery players on the roster outfielders Bert Farrow and Mike Manning, catcher Roger Selph and pitcher Jimmy Salter, all of Lee High School, and former Jeff Davis High School outfielder Abe Thomas. ACC LOSES DOUBLE-HEADER MIAMI Florida International swept a double-header from the Alabama Christian Eagles here Monday afternoon, winning 5-4 and 3-2.

It was the season opener for ACC. Alabama Christian rallied from a 5-0 fifth-inning deficit in the first game. The Eagles scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh, but up one run short. Doug Webb had an RBI triple and Mike Hughes had an RBI single in the Eagle sixth. Bruce Hill had a double in the seventh for ACC.

Ric Strasser, 2-0, was the winning jitcher. Scott Adams, 0-1, was the loser ACC held a 1-0 lead through 5Vi nnings in the second game, but Eagle pitching gave up three runs in -he sixth.
