The Washington correspondent of the Tribune says: "Great preparations are in progress on the Tacific coist for the rush of gold-feekers who are expected to invade the country the roiling tpririg. and the cotnpntitinn between rival towns for the outfitting trade will be fiercer than it was last year.

"Accord in-r to a report just received from United States dnsul Smith of Victoria, U. the enterprising merchants of that town feel that they did not get their share of the last year's trade and are determined tv and hold it next season. Their expectations are high. Early in the advance guard of the mighty army of expected gold seekers from Australia arrived, one hun-dted strong. Consul Smith says: "Agents from England have been here and are now hre, making contracts for housing three or four thousand gold seekers, and every hotel in Vicloria has contracts for all its rooms for portions of several months.

When it is remembjred that at least a portion of the great legion from the United States will paso through this port it will be seen that this picturesque little city bids lair to have its hands full later oil. One company has iilrcady secured seventy carloads of outfitting goods and several other leading business men of Victoria, accustomed to doing things on a large wale have made equally liberal preparations for the coming trade. The transportation have, by purchase or leue securd o'ean iteam-nrs sufficient to make daily lines between this port and St. Michaels. Ltyoa, Fort Wrungell, etc." FOUND A FIVER.

England Not Elated. New lork, Jan. 3.

Mr Ford, in his cabled letter to the Tribune says: The holiday revel goes on and there is no'excitement in England over the ituaUon in the far east, even the evidence points clearly to a French understanding with Russia. Knglish apathy, in reality, imp'ies a coD'iioasness of strength. oyer liecomes more important whf maritime Euroie is deej ly conccrnel in the future of remote countries, and it is England's stronghold. With her chain of coaling ao naval stations encircling the globe, she can afford to wait until foine nation directly challenges her. To this sense of security is added an instinctive recoil against any policy which may increase the burdens of the Empire, England is already iangerously near the verge? of conscription.

The perplexities of the situation in the east, moreover, arj dense, an! the English public is waiting forwi from Lord Salisbury, remembering his dictum that there is room enough for all in Aiia.
