WINNIPEG, Jan. 7. About fifty appeals from Mr. Justice Prud'hom me's appeal tribunal will be carried to Ottawa, it was learned this morning. The cases are being taken to the highest court provided for under the Military Service Act by E.

Tay-leur, the special military representative who was appointed by Lieut-Colonel Bell. Many of the appeals are in connection with decisions given by tribunal No. 71, which were upheld by Judge Prud'homme. The latter tribunal, which is composed of Henri Royal and ex-Alderman Cusson, of St Boniface, refused exemption in only eight cases out of over 200 which were heard. WINNIPEG, Jan.

7. Jacob Pierce, well known member of the Jewish Fraternity in Canada, died here today after a short illness at the age of 78. The funeral will take place tomorrow. He leaves four sons and four daughters: Charles, of Timmins, Ont; Asher and Michael, of Montreal; and Captain R. of Montreal, are the sons.

Thursday and Friday of this week Perth will be the mecca of Eastern Ontario dairymen, who will be here at the 41st annual convention in large numbers. Prominent dairymen and agriculturists will give addresses on live subjects pertaining to the dairying industry.

Among the speakers will be Hon. T. A. Crerar. minister of agriculture; J.

A. Ruddick. dairy commissioner; G. G. Publow.

dairy instructor Eastern Ontario; Prof. H. H. Dean. O.A.C.; Prof.

J. H. Gris-dale. L. A.

Zufelt, Dr. J. W. Robertson, G. A.

Putnam, N. Slune, James Alexander, Frank Hearns, A. A. Ayer, and others. The convention will open at ten o'clock Thursday morning in the town hall, and again after adjournment at two o'clock that afternoon.

That evening convention will open again at 7.30. Friday morning the assemblage will convene again at 9.30 and again at two o'clock in the afternoon. The final and closing session will be held at eight Friday evening. Mayor Hands will give an address of welcome at Thursday evening's meeting, which will be largely attended by citizens of Perth. Music will be rendered at all the meetings and general discussions will take place at the close of each address.

The dairy industry is one of Canada's most important industries and the assiciation is offering over $500 in cash prizes for butter and cheese, and special prizes, amounting to $400. The judges of cheese will be Messrs. George H. Barr, Ottawa, and Herbert Morton, Belleville. Mr.

J. W. Steinlioff, of Toronto, will judge the butler exhibit The competition is confined to the makers of Eastern Ontario. Joint Daily Service. Dominion Methodist, Knox Presbyterian, St.

Andrew's Presbyterian and First Baptist churches, which had arranged daily prayer meetings for this week in response to the King's proclamation, have united and will hold joint services at the Y. M. C. A. daily, from 5.15 to 5.4S p.m.

This step, arranged throught the generous co-operation of the T. M. C. A. authorities, is taken with the object of conserving the city's coal supply.
