George Phend said of Friday's inmate disorder in which one prisoner was killed and 46 others wounded. One guard also was injured slightly.

A two-day shakedown of reformatory cells in January brought an order from C.ov. Edgar U. Whitcomb o( tougher security measures at the institution. Guards turned up a zip gun, more than too homemade knives and a quantity of .22 and .38 caliber cartridges. A guard was slashed in May.

He has recovered. Guards fired three shots in the air Aug. 20 to disperse a crowd of prisoners protesting the placing of seven men in solitary confinement for fighting. A prisoner was wounded in knifing Sept. 4.

Last year two reformatory prisoners were killed. One inmate was convicted in one of the slayings. Charges against an inmate in the other case are pending. On Feb. 19, 1907, 60 prisoners set fire to the reformatory mess hall.

On Nov. 21, 19G7, 25 prisoners overpowered a guard, locked him in a cell, broke windows and burned mattresses. When the director of the reformatory band was transferred to another job, bank members staged a seven-hour sit- down demonstration July 9, 1968. On Aug. 5, 1968, 42 inmates were transferred to the State Prison at Michigan City after a demonstration over food service and alleged racial discrimination.

In the same month a counselor was beaten by two prisoners.
