One by one, he's trying to make up for all his past mistakes. We have our own list: the reasons why Earl is beating the odds and is holding its own in one of television's most competitive time periods. l. Despite its formula every week, Earl rights a previous wrong the show continues to throw surprises. Last week, for example, it started out as a mission to replace snacks stolen over the years from the local convenience store, and turned instead into a riotously funny outing about making amends with a girl Bond: Continued from PAGE El Bond, who is the best gambler in the British secret service, is given the assignment of breaking Le Chiffre at the baccarat tables. The most controversial chapter in the book and the one that left Fleming open to charges of sadism is a torture scene in which Bond is viciously beaten on the testicles. Campbell says the sequence will be in the new film. "Essentially the book remains pretty much intact. My Name is Earl has some funny lines but no laugh track to tell you when to laugh. 3. My Name is Earl's solid moral core and firm grasp of right and wrong is neither sappy nor preachy. 4. My Name is Earl rocks. It's lively, entertaining, well-timed, cleverly written, confidently acted and brimming with a positive, feel-good vibe. Tonight, Earl takes over an ESL class, so he can cross "Made fun of people with accents" off his list. (9 p.m., CH, NBC) Four weeks into the new season, the truth can be told: The year's most distinctive bump-in-the-dark new creep-show is Supernatural. The made-in-B.C. Route 66-meets-X-Files mystery has a pair of estranged brothers (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) hunting the back roads of America for spooks and chills. Sticking to the book tal-whacking thing all that remains. And Bond will fall in love with Vesper Lynd, as he does in the book. "He's just received his 007 stripes when he comes into the story, so he's going to have some rough edges in him to begin with. And by the end of it, hopefully he'll become the 007 we all know and love." Campbell, who directed Pierce Brosnan's first Bond film, Goldeneye, several years ago, made it clear that he was not involved in the Broccoli family's decision not to bring Brosnan back for a fifth Bond movie. From its perpetual gloom and rain shadow to its nifty use of music last week's episode featured the Rolling Stones' Laugh, I Nearly Died and Def Leppard's Rock of Ages Supernatural is a keeper. (op.m.,Citytv) The Rolling Stones are the "it" band of the hour. The daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives will celebrate its 40th anniversary today by airing the Stones video Streets of Love, filmed partly at Zaphod Beeblabrox in the Byward Market when the band was in town for a concert this summer. (Zaphod will also stage a party starting at noon, and broadcast the show on TV monitors.) Days of Our Lives will use the song as background music in several key scenes over the next three weeks. The venerable soap opera debuted Nov. 8, 1965 around the time the Stones performed their first tour. (1 p.m., Global, NBC) Meanwhile, Michael Wilson told The New York Times on the weekend that the producers were "desperately afraid" that the series would go downhill. He suggested the producers were running out of energy and needed to "generate something new" and "find new inspiration for the series." The irony here is that Brosnan had long been asking for a change of direction and suggesting that the producers take a leap of faith by making a more intimate thriller in the vein of From Russia With Love, considered by many critics to be the best 007 movie of all. 7:25-10:00; SAT.-SUN., TUE.
