"We got the win, which is big, and we also had a good solid day of curling," Scott added. "I think we can draw a bit of mo-, mentum from that. "We haven't faced a weak" team yet and despite how they're doing out there we can't expect them to miss easy shots either. "We're going to have to work for two wins." Sweden's Anette Norberg finished the day in first place at 5-0 after handing Debbie Mc-Cormick of the United States her first loss, 8-5 in the morning draw, and dumping Angelina Jensen of Denmark 8-6. 'One good shot from the opposition and that's all it takes, to be Scotland skip KELLY WOOD "We are the kind of team that1 would like to win every game," said Norberg, the reigning world champion and Olympic gold medallist.

But despite the five wins, Norberg said she doesn't look past her next game or ahead to the end of the week. "We've been around too long to be stupid (and) believe that we can't be beaten," she added. Germany's Andrea Schoepp also improved her record to 3-2 with a 6-5 win over the Nether-, lands. The U.S. finished the day in second place at 4-1 after blasting Denmark 9-2 in a game that went just six ends.

Denmark is now 3-2. The championship, held at the Canada Games Arena, will run through March 26. Just when it seemed the day couldn't get any darker, the sun finally shone on Canada's Kelly Scott at the Ford World Women's Curling Championship yesterday. The skip from Kelowna, B.C., appeared to be on the verge of her second straight defeat of the day, which would seriously hurt her playoff chances, when she finally got a break.

Kelly Wood from Scotland missed an angle tap with her final shot in the 10th end and the score tied 6-6, giving Canada a 7-6 victory. "I think we needed that. We had such a tough day," said Scott, who lost 5-4 to unheralded China in the morning draw. "We were working so hard out there two games straight and thank God we got a break," Scott said. "It was a battle out there today." Canada ended the day with a respectable 3-2 record.

For Wood it was a game she realized Scotland should have won. "One good shot from the opposition and that's all it takes, to be honest," said Wood. "We were in control the whole game, playing it safe all we wanted was hammer in the last end we were talking inches and that's all it was in the end." Scott hasn't been showing the same form she had while winning this month's Scott Tournament of Hearts and even when she was runner-up at the Olympic curling trials in December. Menard's rink was considered a relative longshot against more heavily favoured teams skipped by the likes of Howard, Alberta's Kevin Martin, Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton and Nova Scotia's Mark Dacey. In the 12-team round-robin, though, the Quebecers placed second at 8-3. Although he lost the one-two playoff to Howard and struggled to beat Dacey in the semis, Menard reached the final.

His rink played in 11 bon-spiels this season and won $28,000, but they only entered competitions they could reach by car because of a lack of corporate sponsors to cover the costs of airfare and other travel expenses. Now, that could change, based on several post-Brier conversations. For three years, we've worked hard. If you don't push and work hard, you don't have results." After Menard was introduced to curling by his father, Robert, and mother, Lucie Gagne, his brothers Nicolas, Martin and Philippe and sister Catherine followed him into the sport. Over the past decade, each of the Menard, siblings has appeared in a Canadian championship. Jean-Michel's wife, Annie Lemay, also is a competitive curler, playing second on the Marie-France Larouche rink that competed in the 2005 Olympic trials and was a finalist in the 2004 Tournament of Hearts national women's championship. Jean-Michel Menard, who played in the 1996 national junior championship, hit the curling radar in 2001, when he skipped a Quebec rink to the Canadian mixed title on his second try.

The top Cup rookie in 2004, Kahne slumped last year. But he's started this season with four strong performances, including an nth-place run at Daytona and two fourth-place finishes before earning the second victory of his career. His first win came last May in Richmond and was the highlight of a difficult sophomore season.

"We had momentum," said Kahne, who also finished second to Jeff Burton in Saturday's Busch Series race here. "We've had momentum all weekend long. Man, to win at one of my favourite racetracks, is so cool." Mark Martin made a late run at Kahne, driving his Ford alongside and nosing ahead of Kahne's No. 9 Charger 12 laps from the end of the 325-lap event. But Martin had to back off when his car began to slide and he was not able to challenge the leader again.

Kahne, who led 85 laps including the final 80, finished 1.929 seconds about 20 car lengths ahead of Martin. We just couldn't beat Kasey," Martin said. "He was strong there at the end and really got up on the wheel when I got up with him there at the end." A human resources consultant for Bowater Produits Forestiers du Canada in Gatineau, Menard is on the ice four times a week in Ottawa, either practising or playing in cash leagues at the Rideau and Ottawa clubs. He plays once a year at the Victoria Curling Club in Ste-Foy, his Quebec-based club, and only meets Roberge, Sylvain and Elmaleh for competitions.

"I honestly felt we had a little angel beside us (during the Brier)," he said. "The wife of our coach died the day after the provincials, and for a while he felt he wouldn't go to nationals." Michel Ste. Onge is the coach of the Menard team. His wife, Germaine Poisson, died of cancer, after Menard won his second provincial title in a row. Menard said the effect of the "little angel" showed up in many ways during Brier week.

If his rink was in trouble, opponents would miss key shots. If his rink needed to make a shot, it was done. "Everything fell into place," Menard said. 1- 6 0 0 1- 62 0 0 0 0 0 0 NEW JERSEY DEVILS Continued from PAGE CI COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS "Every guy is back. Does Smart dare to dream of the Carleton matching Victoria's record of seven consecutive CIS men's basketball championships (1980-86)? "Not at all," said Smart, who has a 163-19 OUACIS record over seven seasons as Ravens head coach.
