'1 he Mayor was the recipient of hundreds of congratulations during the evening, and if his right hand is not "very much swollen this morning, is certainly not because it was not very warmly shaken by an immense numWr of supporters and personal friends.

SUCCESSFUL ALDERMANIC CANDIDATES Kxrttlng entrot la all ikf anU-lr. Pal-nrll Prabaltlv la M. Ounc'i-Hlg Vale for flavor Mr wart la Writing-ton Ward. Yesterday whs one of the most exciting lays in the history of municipal elections. 'he fact that three candidates were running for the Mayoralty, Mayor Stewart, Aid.

Ix-w is and Mr. W. K. Brown, made a combination the working of which no one could make out. That the Mayor and Mr Brown would poll big votes was assured, and the strength of the latter in the lower wards was said to have increased.

He had to knock oil a 4 Iti majority obtained by the Mayor last year, but the third candidate, many tnouglit, would materially assist mm to do that. just how strong Aid. Lewis was no one exactly knew, and it was feared that the vote in Wellington Ward would be somewhat split. With nil airs in this condi- tion, all hands put their shoulders to the wheel for their respective candidates, and hustled round in a lively manner. The scrutineers closely watched the voters as they came up to record their votes, and no chance was missed on either side of scoring a Hiint.

L'ntil aftei dinner there was no great amount of work done, although wild rumours were circulated, one! being that Aid. Lewis had a vote equal to the other two candidates in Wellington Ward. This, however, received no credence, and in the afternoon in the upper wards it was soon found out that the Stewart vote would lo a) particularly heavy one, On a visit leing made to the lower wards it was seen that the Mayor was still the popular candidate in the Keystone Ward, and a substantial majority was assured. In By and Ottawa Wards the excitement was intense, and the polling stations were surrounded with enthusiastic voters, each shouting for their respective candidates, the ninjority seeming to favour Mr. Brown.

Here the Mayor's supporters worked with a will, knowing that their every effort was necessary to hold their end up, and the votes Milled were laige. Mr. Brown in these two war.ls polled majorities, but.the Mayor was too far ahead in the other four, and the 314 majority was the result. The alderinanic elections also caused excitement and the closeness of the contest in St. I ieorge's Ward is shown from the fact that last night neither Aid.

O'Leary or Dr. Paruell -could tell which was elected, although the doctor states that his majority is four. Considerable interest was taken in the Wellington Ward contest and a number of single votes were given to Aid. Cox and Mr. Hill, the latter making a big run and only suffering defeat by thirteen votes.

A surprise party struck By Ward and Aid. (. O'Keefe was the sufferer as he was beaten in a close run. The voting between Messrs. Laverdure and Iarose was closely watched and the former came out thirteen ahead, ho was defeated in the recent by-election.

Contrary to expectations Aid. Bingham headed the poll in Ottawa Ward, it being whispered that a strong ticket had been formed against him. Aid. Desjardins polled a good vote but not as large as was exacted and not sufficient to put him in. In the Baby Ward the voting was riuietly but energetically carried on and tho same three candidates were returned, Aid.

AskwKh, a great favourite in the ward, heading the list for the second time. The only contest for Public School Trustee was in St. (ieorge's Ward, where Mr. S. May nard Rogers defeated Aid.

Whillans by 133 votes. A noticeable feature in the contest was the numlxr of ladies' who were prevailed uKn to exercise the franchise. The contest was conducted with spirit throughout but was fought with good humour, each determined that the best men should win. Aid. Ileney, the lather of the Council, was heartily congratulated on having success-I fully run the gauntlet for the thirty-second time.

At Mr. Brown's headquarters a large crowd congregated to hear the result of the contest and as the majorities from By and Ottawa Wards came in the spirits of this candidate's supporters went up. When the Wellington Ward returns came down, however, and it was seen that Alderman Lewis had not effectually split the vote, the battle was seen to be lost, and the enthu-: siasm received a damper. On being loudly called for, Mr. Brown stepped forward, and amid loud applause, in a few words thanked the electors for tho etlorts they had made oji his behalf.

He would never forget them, and though they were lteaten, they were not disgraced. They had rolled up a good vote, and he thanked them for their hard work. RKi 1 The total vote polled for the Mayoralty this year was an against last year, or an increase of 74 votes. Of these Mayor Stewart polled 1,957, as against last year, and Aid. Brown 1 ,43, as against Aid.

Lewis taking the remaining 300. In the aldermanic contest in Victoria Ward Aid. Oordon last year stood third on the list, and this year heads the poll, showing an increase of 47 votes. The vote in Wellington Ward shows the leaders to have polled considerably higher than lost year. Aid.

Cox leading last year with Ml and standing third this year with H1'2, Aid. Monk's figures being In St. (ieorge's Ward Mr. Krratt secured 174 more votes than the total obtained by Aid. Borthwick last year he polling '2 votes less than last year.

r. Parnell scored l'2(i points more than last year and Aid. O'Leary K4 more. By Ward having live candidates as against four last year, the yote was more split and more evenly divided among the four candidate, there being only iJ. votes difference between the first and fourth candidal s.

In Ottawa Ward Aid. Bingham obtained 74 more votes than last year and jumped from third place to Aid. Desjardins was last year elected with a vote of 377 and was defeated this year with In New Edinburgh Ward a stronger vote was polled Ask-! with increasing his score by votes, Aid. Henderson by 5 and Aid. Roger by THE AVOIl's IIF.AIXiCARTEKS were at the Russell.

Soon after five o'clock the spacious office of that hotel liegan to be crowded, and an hour Infore the last of the returns were received in the ladies' ordinary, which was utilized for a committee loom, at least live hundred jiersons were present, anxious to hear the result of the contest. The returns artived slowly, but when it was fell that His Worship's election was certain, the enthusiasm waa unbounded, and it found vent in rounds of cheers. A rumour got abroad that intelligence from Mr. Brown's committee rooms was to the effect that that gentleman was ahead, but it dt.l not receive any credence.aml turned out to be erroneous. Finally, alout seven o'clock, the last of the returns arrived, and when the announcement was made in the committee room that the Mayors majority was a mighty cheer went up, ami was taken up.

by the densely acked crowd in the ollice. Loud demands or a sjM-ech from the Mayor Mere made, and when he made his appearance on the stairway he received an ovation. When order was restored TIIK MAVOI: said electors of the city' of Ottawa, there are times in one's life when words can but feebly express the feelings of the In art; that is the position I find myself in this evening, on the of lvs. If there is one thinq more than another a man could le proml of it is to know and feel Unit he has the good will, the esteem, the regard and what is of greater value the good opinion of his fellow-j citizens.
