It couifl not be said truthfulJy that he favored one side or the other in the council, and any mistakes that he might have made were due to the position of affairs. It was customary, as all know, to give a mayor a fecond term, if he did at all well. He did not want to say that he had even done fairly well, but thera was no one who could say that he had taken any section of the council into his confidence.

He conducted himself as an independent party. That was the way he went in and th3 way hs would go out. Thompson, A- C. Manning. Cornwall After the Championship. Cornwall, Dec. 27 (Special) The Cornwall Hockey Club are growing daily more and more confident of their ability to win tha senior championship of the Ontario Hockey Association.

The dashing way in which their forward line carried a war into Morris-burg's territory on Christmas night was a revelation to even their most enthusiastic admirers. Cornwall will have the benefit of the coaching, and perhaps of tha playing of a couple of the best men iu Canada. Brockville is looked upon as an easy mark, and if the forward line get a little more combination with the daph they have so far displayed, they can hold their own with soy team in tha country. THE RING. A Mill at Toronto.

Toronto, Pec. 27. The, first of a series of Saturday night hpxing contests were given Saturday evening in the Albert Hail on Yonge street. The leading event was a ten round go at 124 pounds between Luke Stevens of Buffalo, and Billy Breen, of this city, with Jim Popp as referee. Breen looked to be in splendid shape, and had a little advantage in height.

Stevens' muscles looked too "thick," but he showed op ia fine stylfeEf'tlii nun CI uf sparring, and Breen worked a lot with his legs, while the Buffaio lad contented himself with keeping Breen in froot of him. Hei has a caste iu his right eye and had to do all his looking with the left, a proceeding that evidently puziled Breen not a iittle. Stevens' mains ta" as his infighting and this won tiimr the battle. In the mix up he got in four blows to Breen one. The second round openru with the men at) it not.

Clinches were frequent. Thev were at cloje quarters in the middle of the round when Stevens landed heavily on the body, and Breen dropped. Both men did clever work, but Stevens was undoubtedly the cleverer. SKATINO. The Victoria Rink at Cornwall.

Cornwall, Dec. 27-Speeial There can be no disputing the popularity nf skating in Cornwall. The new covered rink, which is one of the largest and best appointed in Canada, is crowded every night since the skating season opened, and aside from the ladies', gentlemen's and children's tickets that have been sold nearly 300 family tickets have already been issued. The people of Cornwall setm to think that this fine, healthy winter sport helps to make strong self-reliant men and be.utiful healthy women. CURLING.
