Four other representatives for 1895 retired volun tarily. The three aldermen defeated were leading members of the Council and much regret is felt at their non- success.

Aid. Greene, one of the ablest aldermen that ever sat at the Council; Aid. McGuire, a representative who served his ward faithfully and well, and Aid. Enright, who did good work for his constituents, and bid fair to make his mark at the Board this year, were those left on the battlefield. Such ii the gratitudi of electors.

Hewlett, J. Gareau and V. H. Cluff sat in the Council betore. year's Council had six novices at its first, meeting.

A Good Vote Was Polled. Although the weather was unusually cold, a fairly large vote was pollea. Leading supporters of the different bylaws got out their friends and those who were opposed to the passage of the by-laws also madj it a point to record their vote3. The result was that votes were polled. Polling was slow in the morning, but it livened up in the afternoon, and in many subdivisions the record were broken.

In cne ward. Central Ward, no less than 301 votes were polled. Yet with all the bustle about the polling booths, and the excitement existing among the candidates, their friends and others, the elections passed over without any disturbance of any sort. Money By-laws Defeated. Contrary to general expectations, the three money by-laws were defeated by large majorities, even the Central Fair By-law being nearly 503 votes in the minority.

For sometime past there has been an understanding among the many travellers, who stop at the Windsor House during their trips to Ottawa, that they would show their appreciation of the kind offices of Messrs. 1).

G. Robinson and K. C. Headlam, the two gentlemen at tbs desk. were precipitated last evening by an appointed delegation, who mads it their business to meet there.

About nine o'clock the clerks were unexpectedly called into r.rvtt of the cosy waiting rooms by Messrs. W. Gosling, If. Weary. A.

W. Gardner, J. Hughes, W. D. McLaren, A.

Snowier and L. L. Lewis of Montreal; H. Taplin, of Toronto, and w. tanning, ot (j-uelph.

Taken by surprise, the two gentlemen were gently pu-Jxvl into the centre of the circle. Mr. Gosling presided. Mr. McLaren stepped forward, and in a few neatly woven words, presented Mr.

Robinson with a beautiful gold watch, suitably engraved on the inside. The recipient replied in pleading terms, showing that was right ii i.t,rm a social occasion as well as on ih's stump. Then came Mr. Iteadlam's turn to go I hrough tbe pleasant ordeal. Mr.

Hughes, on behalf of the travellers, in turn presented him with a handsome bronze clock. This also bore a nice inscription of unique design. A speech followed from tho genial gentleman, after which the party adjourned to the dining room and iridulgjd in spaech and song for an hour. The whole affair had been kept so quiet that even the well known proprietor Mr. Samuel Danie's did not know of thra presentation until it was about half over.

There was only one man of hi? delegation lacking, anil that was Mr. Hugh Cowan, who was unavoidably absent In th'J Northwest. IXM7AL BRIKI S. The various public schrxtis re-open today. Th; iww school oai St.
