WIUGHT, WVlllnpton sir-rt Ottawa, October iTlii. the Opposition while selfishly availing themselves of their assistance, did not keep them in their agitations, and opposed all the schemes of the Government lor the amelioration of the condition of the province. As one of the lato members for Halifax plut it, tho(Jrits had "opposed inch by inch, and Mcp by step, every leonccHion to Nova 'Scotia." After having paited With the Opposition on grounds so peculiarly strong, that adherence to that party hasfeince become a ban There is no use in rpeakmg to the managers of tho company; they appear to have lost all sense of decency and honor. If any action is to be taken, it must be in the City Council and there anyone there man enough to stand up for the people's rights in this matter? The managers ol the gas company may be great municipal wire pullers but any interference in elections on their part, in opposition to a man who opposes their wholesale unblusning violation of tho contiact to supply the city witb gas, can very soon he silenced. If the Council won't enforce the Gas Company to give us light.

THE BEECHWOOD CEMKTEKY. Coniirt rating tlir (iroundi An Imposing Cereuion) Tlir A pcrnre of tle Groiiiiilni ami llir IJl.hop'ii llframki, Last Saturday afternoon the consecration of the Beechwood Cemetery was proceeded with after several delays, which were occasioned by tho inclemency of tho weather. The grounds bavo been fenced all around with a very durable and, at the same time, ornamental wooden fence. The cemetery it sol I has been subdivided into parcels and lots, through whicii 'beautiful avenues bavo been constructed and Appropriately named, g.ving tho whole a very picturesquo Appearance. They are tastefully arranged, interesectingeach other an even manner. Wo advise thoso who havo not yet seen the improvements to pay lieeehwood Cemetery a visit. Then thero aro the chapel, the conservatory, mortuary, and stable buildings now being erected, and which are nearly completed.

Tho whole havo been under the direction ol Mr. If. Sin tees, and do liim infinite credit. tut. I'ho Mot chosen for the ceremony was ti flat al tlio foot of the inclination tho l'orYth memorial.

At three o'clock the Lev. gentlemen arrive 1 and the Consocia tion services ol the htircliot Jnglamt were lead, as contained me cnurcn services. Tin: minor's ui.vi His Lordship afterwards brielly addressed thoso present. Ho regretted that thete was not a larger number in attendance to witness tho ceremony Many iiersons, ho I knew, regarded consecration as an act of superstition, yot ho thought it was very strange that porsons who were such alarmists of superstition did not look upon the consecration of buildings as such. Ihe practice, however, was becoming more popu lar ot Lite, and lie was glad it was, lor ne thought tho clay wherein the mortal remains of the dead lay moid li ing should not bo denied i onsecral nn.

lie regarded it as a good omen that tho -several Protes tant denominations bad como forward and requested him to perform tho ceremony. Ho thought that consecration did a great dpal towards producing a toper respect for the dead, anil weshould encourage the time honored custom, lie concluded by expressing his satisfactionat taking part so interesting a ceremony. The 14'nd hymn was then pronounced the benediction. Accipkst. bast Saturday evening a I.ttlc girl about seven years ot age, was run over it the eastern approach to the Sappers bridge.

She was a daughter or l.owies. of Bank Street. Ihe wheel ot the vehicle passed over her leg, but when taken to I'r. Kobillard office -lie was found to have mi--. tained no fractuic.

To the Editor of The citizen Sir, Turn your attention from politics lor a few minutes and see it there is no way whatever to enforce the Gas Company to supply the citv with the gas we aro taxed so heavily for. Night after night our streets are enveloped darkness, ana scarce gas lamp is lighted. Is is the lault of the Fire and Light committee? Some of the worthy Aldermen wen: mad over the sign by-law, for fear their heads should btrike against projecting signs; but did any ot them never run against a lamp post on a dark night? ir not, let these public dinners be hurried up, and perhaps some of them will we will then have the lamps lighted, or we won't have to ppy for them. LOTTERY AND FANCY TABLE. J. F. Caldwell. iptolr 1 TX) WHO IS To 15 La ME i die ofTitK Citizbx I have frequently noticed severa well-merited reflections in your columns oil the disgraceful manner in which the Fire amf Light Committee performs its duties.

The lamps aro reldom or ever lighted properly those which aro occasionally honored by a visit from the lamp lighter, aro little bel'er than useless, and only serve to make the darkness nioro appaient. It is a remarkable fact also that on bright moonlight nights tho lamps aro almost invariably a bhizo of light, while on dark ights tho re-verse is the caso. This was particularly noticeable last evening. At the coiner of Hugo and Sparks streets a deep excavation is made for tho waterworks in of con struction. Across tins pit two narrow planks are placed and as the absence ot light is particularly noticeanlo here, the unfortunate pedestrian is obliged to push blindly forward, regardless of consequences.

Iast evening, while the congregai ion ot Christ Church was returning home iiom per-vice, a gentleman namedWm. McKay had the misfortune to slip otf the hank ot earth thrown up. and land at the base of the pit. Fortunately he sustained no injuries beyond a few slight bruises, and the soiling of his wearing apparel. It is time that such culpable carelessness on the part of our city authorities was rectified and it will only be when several accidents have occurred, and suits tor damage are instituted, that our City Fathers will be aioused from their apathy to the necessity of fulfilling their duties.

The citizens ol Ottawa aro justly indignant at neglected condition of the public streets. these lines will have a beneficial ellect, I remain, four's respectfully. WM. J. 1-o'WEK.

i i c. 1873. THE NEW P.KlDGE. To I lie KJIUir or The Cirizk.v. Sin, (jratUude to a giver is always keejiing with strict justice, and while the public mind is agitated concerning a name lor our now bridge connecting Wollinuton and Kidcau ssreots, I would otfer a lew sug-go-dions which however worthy of oonsidetn-lion, may not receive hiiflicient attention to guarantee tho adoption of a name to bo pro-posed.

As yet there appears to bo coiiMdcral indecision as to what the new name shall I.e. I therefore de-no to direct public attention to one important fact in connection with tho prosperity of our city. When our Parliament was perambulating alternately from East to West and rise rtisa. ami great dissasisfaction prevailed at having the public reeoids exposed to loss and damage by such removals, the public mind was very much agitated, in order to decide on ono place as a permanent location for the records ot Canada, it was then agreed in f'aihament to submit to the award of our most gracious Majo-ty, ueen Victor a. who in her wisdom decided on Ottawa as the pi imanent Seal ot Government, thereby settling hat question and mailing our city the most important iu 'anada.

and should these matters be forgotten? (Ilcio I may remark, that our lespoctcd Piemier, Sir. John A. Macdonahl, should foi-ever have tho thanks ot this community, for so nobly standing lirrn to tlio decision of Her Majesty, until those towering buildings were successfully brought to their present state completion.) Again, how many ol were piesent at the arrival at Ottawa of II. Uoyal lnghness, Piinco Albert, kindly sent to Canada by our beloved Queen to lay the coiner stone of the Parliament Puddings These kindnesses must not bo forgotten by the good people of Ottawa, and by giving this new and permanent structure (leunit ing he cast rind western portions of In; c'l the name ol vicroidi 111:11 ok. Tbo Iiei 'holders of Ottawa would rejoice, and geneial -at i-faction prevail in every quarter.

I am one of the early set tlci at (displace and consequently can reflect on the pad with amaement I glance back at the loneliness o( (Ins once dreary and thickly wooded Yvilderness, whero our now prospei-ous city stands, 1.. iking rapid strides in evey direction, causing the old citizens to gae with astonishment, and all agree that 'it 1 a is destined tn bo a great city. We are indebted to our beloved Quoon for ail thr-, therefore, would ng.iin suggn-t the name as most appropriate. Should our Civic Fathers take a sc. on I-ary view of (he subject, probably the Chi namo of our future King would meet their d-'siie, and then call the structure K'lUI.

'New Advertisements this Dav IMMEDIATELY One Drv Good Salesman at ('HAS lilt VHoN 'a, Sjvirks nr-et. 1 vtoix The Pacific Railway Scandal. lgg 3HaO3) i on 8ACK AT Henderson Co's, i in Nova Scotia, a membclr for ihat province, especially ono who had becn in any way instrumental in aiding the formation of the union, would find himself a most awkward position in aiding tho conspiracies of men who aro oppose 1 not only to tho British spirit which should animate our politics, but opposed alio to what are deemed the of tho province 'be comes from. Tho present Opposition have the peculiar of having unfairly criticised and attempted to thwart every attempt to introduce a new province 4o the union, or to conciliate any disaffection in one of the original provinces. It they hal bad their way Nova Scotia would still be out of tune with tho Confcdeiation New Jiiunswick would ho distracted with internal discord and discontented with her financial position; Lntuh Columbia would have a lessened representation Prince Kdward Island would probably be not in the union at all.

Jf these facts do not appeal to maritime members, to make thorn hesi tato about joining the Opposition, they aro less frhrewd, less wise, than wo tako them to be. Moreover, it is a matter of congratu lat ion that not one of tho maritime Minis ters has ever been even suspected of having had any hand in any of the transactions which tho Opposition aro making capital out of. The dead and the living arc alike unstained; and to sustain them power, power which they have used f-o wisely and so well, should be one of the principal aitm of their fellow proyin It be that it is on tho constitution al grounds of the case that tho members we refer to aro refusing their support to tho iovernment. Thero is not single point (wo defy any one to produce one; of consti tutioual practice in which tho position taken by tho 'iovernment is not sustained by tho Ceneral (himself a pupil of the Liberal school of politics) by tho British pi ess, by tho (iovern 'nent, and by every record of tho most extensive and the most brilliant collection ol contitu-tional precedents in Europe It cannot bo that it is iu tho belief that the (iovernment are guilty of the crimes alleged against them, that these gentlemen are going to withdraw their ipport. For even the worst of tho Opposition have not yet dared to mako that direct, statement, and- only contend that tho question oi guilt one ftill for Parliamentary enquiry.

It cannot bo, epecially for tho younger men of them, that they hope for higher position, a greater career, a loftier ambition on tbo other sido of tho Ifoue, in the party opposed to tho Administration for it is tbo party in power al tho present which has most fostered rising talent, and, iu wio imitation of the Whig policy of Sonicr and Montague, has honorably won to its sido tho best of the young Iiteiary and polieal talent of tho liominion. Wo aro, iu line, totally unablo to fathom tho reasons which threaten todivide certain members from their old political frionds, to separato them from tho party which has be friended every interest they hold dear, and to seduce them into action against the strontr feelings of their Province. XoiKntf .1 ceil s-cU Hint. I'ho study of tlio articles ot tho Opposition press will for tho next week prove an occupation of much interest and amusement. i'ho papers which have been laid before Par.

Lament contain so much that is unpalata ble, and so lit tic that they can lay hold on to tamper with or to garble, that their man ner of dealing with them will call for all their ingenuity, and test to tho utmost the extent of their partian vocabulary. Ono instalment has come to hand fiom tho highest Opposition quarter. We hive read it with much interest and, after doing so, havo come to tho conclusion that tho despatches aro considered unanswerable, and that tho only manner in which they will bo dealt with will bo by sneers at the (iover-nor (Jenerai and appeals to party passion ng unst tho reasonable effect of tho papers upon tho minds of member. The first, striking sentence which wo find tho first long article of tho ih-st opposition paper is this Nobody accused him (Governor-General) of having acted Wo presumo that members who came to that sentence must hivo felt a little, beivil dcrcd and sat clown without further perusal to take what tho humorist called a big think." Is it possible aro things as they seem, or is vis-" ions about IX) wo not remember that Karl Pi was accused of having used the prerogative ot tho Crown in an oppressive manner, and ihat this accusation was repeated in do.ens of quarters, and in language strong as to cause alarm tho minds of timid peoplo, who thought that tho days, of Nero ere at hand Yet, wo are told that nobody accused him of having acted uncon stitutionally." lt wo not remember thai fierce and frequent allusions were made to Chahlks the first and to Skraoes and kiues, in reference to hirl PrFKtnix's procedure and in indignant denunciation of his action.
