The Guild Presents Fine Japanese Film By WANDA HALE From Japan to the Guild Theatre comes "The Magnificent Seven," a film made by Akira Kurosawa, the director whose "Roshomon" first acquainted us with the creative artistry of Japanese movies. "The Magnificent Seven" is entirely different from "Rosho- Toshiro Mifune mon." It isn't the rare thing of visual beauty that "Gate of Hell" was either. In black and white photography, it is an action pieture, dealing with the annihilation of a band of roaming bandits who, striking as the harvest was being gathered, kept the farmers terrified and at the point of starvation. Kodo help of Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni. Evidenced is his deep percep-1 tion of human nature, his awareness that no two people are alike, however much they look alike. Responding to his sensitive, knowing direction, the actors have given inspired performances. Revealed in "The Magnificent Seven" is Kurosawa's talent for putting violent action on the screen, making it terrifically exciting to audiences. Once the discouraged farmers resolve to try and protect themselves against the marauders, they hire, for three meals a day, professional soldiers, Samurai, to help them defend their village at the next attack.
The Samurai are the magnificent seven, the heroes, of the story. First a leader is carefully chosen. He picks his men, six fearless warriors who not only know their business but take pleasure in planning and executing war with their formidable rivals, the bandits. Never Lose Interest Even during the period of organizing and training the farmers in the art of defense and the long wait for the inevitable invasion, Kurosawa's direction never lets audiences lose interest in the developments. When the showdown comes, the battle scenes are as effective as any ever seen on the screen.
And into the serious business and the violent action he has woven a deal of humor and taken the time to present a perfectly natural affair between a village girl and the youngest, handsomest Samurai. It's a shame not to have the space to give each actor words of praise but I must mention those giving performances that audi- 20th Century-Fox presents PARAMOUNT BROADWAY AT 43rd STREET RICHARD Late Doors Feature Open 9:30 A.M. 11:20 P.M.
