FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1882. Wenther To lay. Washington, July 28. Indication for the ''irlille Atlantic Slates Partly cloudy weather, local rain, wind mostly northwesterly, stationary or lower temperature and pressure. The Independents Very Independent The Independent State Committee met yes terday to consider the propositions of the Re publicans looking toward reconciliation.

They did, just what was all along expected they would do, they rejected all of them. By this action they have closed the door to harmony and have placed themselves squarely in the attitude of open hostility to the Republican party. They are nothing but Democrats in disguise. The decision reached yesterday was outlined days ago by Chairman McKee, the grand Slinger of Mud and Marshal in Chief of Political Slang. Under 9uch weak leadership, the work of achieving a victory for Heaver will not be so hard.

The Chairman of the Independent State Committee will find, ere the campaign is far advanced, that the way to draw Republicans to the support of their ticket is not to link the nauiea of the President and Grant with traitors and assassins. Kven the North American, which has all along countenanced the Independent movement, is forced to say of this outrage upon decency "Whatever may be thought of such an outrage at headquarters, the gentlemen who are guilty of it may take it home to their understandings that the people are not yet educated to suoh things. We hope they may never be so unfortunate as to relish such disgusting balderdash. If we recollect aright, Benedict Arnold betrayed his country, just as Booth and Guileau slew the men whom the American people had chosen to honor and whom the people loved. We do not recollect that cither the President or General Grant ever acted in cither role.

We had supposed that they were at one period in our history engaged in reducing traitors and assassins to subjection. Certainly the Independent movement is not officered by men who rank higher as patriots and gentlemen than the President and General Grant We have no mind to remain silent while any citizen of Philadelphia repeats the outrage perpetrated by Dunne on George Washington." A Scorcher, Yesterday. Yesterday was a severely oppressive day, although the thermometer did not range any higher than on the previous day, the maximum of the mercury being 02 in shady nooks. The atmosphere was sultry, and although the sun was occasionally obscured by clouds the local rains predicted by "Old Probabilities" did not put in an appearance during the day to cool the parched and heated earth. It was a regular "July roaster" and excited the longings of the multitudes who cannot get away to be anywhere rather than in the hot, sultry city.

Yet there is very considerable comfort in the comparison of Reading's experience with that of many other parts of the country where a furious heat, ranging up to tropical figures, prevailed. Many a vaunted country resort was far hotter yesterday than was Reading, and the reflection tends to promote patience aud contentment. There can also be added to this source of consolation the fact that we have already reached the mid summer week, and we can soon begin to contemplate declining temperature as close at hand. It has been, thus far, a summer of unusual moderation, and with the shortening days and cooler nights of August coming, the philosophical portion of mankind and womankind ought to be able to endure the remaining heat of 1882 without grumbling. TnK papers of Philadelphia quote C.

G. Derr, of Reading, as saying at the headquarters of the Independent State Committee that that party in Reading represents at the present time three times the number of votes cast in Reading for Wolfe (175) i. 525 votes. Our friend Dorr always did have a rosy imagination, but this last statement forces the conviction that that faculty of his mind must have enlarged to the dimensions and gorgeousncss nf the gardens outlying Horticultural Hall, Philadelphia. But how much belter to talk in this way than to "go it" as Chairman McKee has been doing.

Ir the Independent Slate Committee find it necessary to put a plaster over the mouth of Chairman McKee, they must be careful not to use one that is porous, since he would manage to ooze out rivers of slush through the holes. Mi'Kkf. is entitled to the cake mud cake, Now let the Republicans get down to solid work. S2. I'M ll Into I lie Co.

For a man whose feot were once caught between two colliding cars, who fell from a building a distance of forty, two feet aud lay unconscious for four hours, who was dragged for a considerable ditance in a desperate runaway, whose ribs were bro. ken at one time and the bones of his wrist subsequently fractured, and who made a narrow escape from drowning, he niay be said, his present excellent physical condition considered, to have been a very lucky nian with all his ill luck. It gains annually in number of new policies issued, premium income, assets, losses paid, dividends to members aud popularity.

It is the Company for all needing insurance, and more especially for Pennsylvania, being the only strictly Mutual Company chartered by the State, and having proved itself staunch and true, through all the vicissitudes of a generation, the insuring public of the old Keystone are justly proud of it, and are wise in becoming members. 7 28 THE DAILY TIMES ANT) DISPATCH BEADING, JULY 28 1882. WORDS FROM THE SOUTH, onfMlprat Money, i'otton mill Poli I lem Matter from JumeN 11. Npolm, of tnyettevllle, N. Mr.

James H. Spohn, formerly of this city, but at present residing in Fayetteville, N. where he is engaged in manufacturing enter prises, has sent to Cyrus T. Fox au interesting collection of Confederate money, some of the denominations being extremely soiree. Mr.

Spohn writes that many people in the section in which he resides are holding on to the Confederate money, in the delusive hope that it may some duy become valuable, aud they may realize something for it. In order to get some of the bills embraced in the collection, Mr. Spohn had to purchase them. The collection will be presented to McLean Post No. lti, G.

A. 11., to be placed in their large and valuable collection of me aentoes of the late war. Mr. Spohn in his letter, enclosing tho samples of money, which is dated 2'2dt writes as follows: "We are having lots of rain, aud corn looks very well. Cotton was predicted to be a short crop, owing to the late, cool, spring, but it has regained very much of its tardiness.

If nothing intercepts its progress, it may still make an average crop, although the acreage is not nearly as great as last year. Corn is being cultivated instead, it being the stall of life in the South, the same as wheat iu the North. I see by the statistical returns of the Department of Agriculture for July, cotton has improved since the first of Juue, its average condition ou the 1st iust. having been three points better. The general average is UU, which is higher than iu July, 1873 and 187 1, and lower than in any other year of the past decade.

was 93 in 1877 and 1879, and J5 last July. This condition is due to a late and wet spring, but is rapid and generally improving under favorable Hkiea. The figures for the several States are: Virginia, 85; North Carolina, 'JO South Carolina, 98 Georgia, 92 Florida, 92; Alabama, 9H Mississippi, 87 Louisiana, Texas, 97 Arkansas, 90 Teuuessee, 78. The drawbacks nre mainly deficient stands, slow growth and general backwardness. North Carolinians call my atteution very frequently to the contest between the Republicans in Pennsylvania, but according to the old saying, "People living in glass houses should never throw stones," for there is the same split among the Democrats in North Carolina, in fact all over the South, as they say they can't put any reliance in the Northern Democracy.

So the "Solid South" has passed into history. The Coalitionists, Anti Prohibitionists, Liberals, as they are called, have united with the Radicals or Republicans. Some of the most extreme Democrats are leaders in the above parties. It is beginning to get hot in politics now. A Republican can talk just as free here as in any State north of Mason and Dixon's line; in fact, there has been too much misrepresentation in the North.

They all know my politics here Republican to the core, and strong on the tariff question, which the people here cannot go. 1 tell them they have perse cuted the goose that laid the golden egg for the i last fifty years, and why not realize its con sequences, and keep up with the North in adj vancement. (Sentr. My little toy, two years old, was affected with rheumatism in his MX leg, seeming to lo completely paralyzed from the hip joint downward. For four months he was utterly incapable of walking or using his limb, and we looked upon the poor little fellow as being a cripple for lite. We had two different doctors to attend him, but they could do nothing for him, and we tried everything we could think of, or that we were advised to do, without his getting any relief. Finally we were recommended to try lr Thomas1 Edeetric and iu ten days the little fellow could walk alone, and now he can run about as lively and sprightly as any child of his age.
