JV Orwell Novel 1984' Six Best Movies for September By KATE CAMERON Now Fantastic Film Amonp; the new moving: pictures that were presented in New York during: September, we have selected the following: titles as representing: the six best pictures of the month r-t "Lust For Life" at the Plaza Theatre ia an MGM production in Metrocolor and CinemaScope and presents Kirk Douglas in an impressive characterization of the Dutch impressionist painter, Vincent Van Gogh. It is based on a When George Orwell wrote "The Animal Farm," he tried to show up the Russian system of communism by poking fun at it, but when he wrote his later novel, "1984," he presented communism in a deadly serious manner. It is photographed in CinemaScope and Metrocolor and has Deborah Kerr, John Kerr and Leif Erick-son re-enacting the roles which they had created on the stage. "The Best Things In Life Are Free," opened at the Victoria Theatre on Friday, thereby brightening up the Broadway screen considerably.

It is a gay and tuneful CinemaScope, De-Luxe Color 20th Century-Fox production, directed by Michael Curtiz, and based on the real-life story of the song-writing trio, DeSylva, Brown and Henderson. The film presents Gordon Mac-Rae, Dan Dailey and Ernest Borgnine in the principal roles with Sheree North as the love interest. Peter Rath-' Ton produced in England, based on "1984," is not, however, as hair-raising as the book in its efforts to shock a complacent publio into a consciousness of the danger inherent in falling under communistic dictatorship. There is something not quite believable about the picture version of "1934" as we view it on the Nor-mandie Theatre Bcreen, even though the producer and director Michael Anderson have achieved some ingenious effects. Orwell's glance into the future and Anderson's presentation of the author's ideas on film, are interesting and novel. But, it is the very nature of the horrific story that defeats its purpose, by making the action hardly credible when translated on the screen.
