Broadway, Edmond "Even though this is an expansion team, we've got a chance to win," the free agent outfielder said after signing a two-year contract with the new AL team. The decision to remain close to his home in nearby Safety Harbor, instead of returning to the Chicago White Sox or continuing his career with Toronto, Milwaukee or Arizona, reunites him with ex-teammates Hernandez and Alvarez, who will be the foundation of Tampa Bay's pitching staff. The Devil Rays project the .276 career hitter as the team's starting right fielder. Martinez, 33, hit .286 with 12 homers and 55 RBIs in 504 at-bats, while playing 75 games in right field, 52 at first base, 45 in center and four in left for the White Sox. Dodgers' Worrell Retires LOS ANGELES Todd Worrell, who had 30 or more saves for the Los Angeles Dodgers each of the past three years but had a string of rocky outings last season, announced his retirement.

Worrell, 38, a three-time all-star, finishes as the Dodgers' career saves leader with 127. He began playing for them in 1993, after eight years with the St. Louis Cardinals. Worrell had 35 saves in 1997 this past season, but blew nine opportunities and finished with a 2-6 record and 5.28 ERA. The Associated Press CHICAGO The Chicago White Sox hired Florida Marlins bench coach Jerry Manuel as manager Thursday, replacing Terry Bevington, who was fired after a disappointing season.

Manuel never has managed at the major league level. He managed Triple-A Indianapolis in 1991 and Double-A Jacksonville in 1990. General manager Ron Schueler called Manuel "the perfect person" to take over the team. Manuel said he was not afraid to manage the White Sox's high-salaried stars. you have to do with big salary or big money players is develop a relationship with those players," he said.

"If you impart rules without a relationship it can bring rebellion." said he hoped to take the team to a level "where year in and year out we will be a postseason-type team." Manuel, 43, spent portions of five seasons in the majors, compiling a .150 batting average in 127 at-bats with Detroit, Montreal and San Diego. Bevington was fired Sept. 30 after finishing second with an 80-81 record, six games behind the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central, despite having one of the biggest payrolls in baseball. Bevington posted a 222-214 record after taking over in June 1995 for Gene La- mont, fired two years after being chosen AL Manager of the Year. Rockies Sign Kile DENVER The Colorado Rockies finally got an ace, agreeing to a $24 million, three-year contract with Darryl Kile that makes him the fourth-highest paid pitcher in baseball.

The 29-year-old right-hander was 19-7 last season for the NL Central champion Houston Astros. His 19 victories marked a career high, tying him for second in the National League. His 2.57 ERA ranked third. The Rockies and Astros had been the top contenders in a bidding war for Kile that had gone on several weeks, but the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks, as well as San Diego, Texas and Baltimore, also made offers. Kile has been with the Astros for six years, compiling a career record of 71-65 with a 3.79 ERA in 209 appearances.

He has made 182 starts. Devil Rays Sign Martinez ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays didn't have to sell Dave Martinez on their commitment to winning. Signing Roberto Hernandez and Wilson Alvarez did that.
