This was in the excellent musical, "Wonderful Town." Last evening, herself to such varying locales as Sutton Place, the deep, deep South and the hidebound suburbs of New York. The bringing-up of her nephew is the least important part of the play and therefore il I the play greatest structural defect. There are funny lines and naughty lines, and under Morton Da Costa's direction "Auntie Mame" maintains an air of smart gaiety. Miss Russell has a supporting cast practically as large as the company of "Tamburlaine the Great," and among these players are some good ones, like Polly Rowles in the role of a beat-down actress and Peggy Cass as a pregnant secretary.

The One Big Reason For me, though, Miss Russell is the whole comedy, and she could phisticated jokes and the hand. play it without any clothes. Isome big company. But the only men SuC run around reason for seein the comedy nekkid, for she is not that kind of Rosalind Russp11 By KATE CAMERON William Wyler, 'Who gave ns the delightful "Roman Holiday" three years ago and thereby brought stardom to Audrey Hepburn, yesterday unveiled another picture on the Music Hall screen that will bring fame to his name. "Friendly Persuasion" must be counted among the best pictures of the year, when it comes time to vote on the quality of the year's film output.

The picture, in DeLuze color, was adapted to the screen from a series of stories by Jessamyn West about a Quaker family living in Indiana at the time of the Civil War. The story, as told in terms of intimate family pictures at Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire. by Wyler and refreshing dialogue devised by Miss West, is a heart warming comedy drama that occasionally pulls at th heartstrings, but which more often convulses the theatre audience with laughter. Effective Performances Wyler produced and directed "Friendly Persuasion" for Allied Artists, with a cast that includes Gary Cooper, Dorothy McGuire, Anthony Perkins, Marjorie Main, Mark Richman, Phyllis Love, Richard Eyer and a most amazingly comic goose, known as Samantha. 1 Miss Love and Richman play their first important roles on the screen as young lovers with charming effectiveness and Tony Perkins will be shot to fame for his sensitive portrayal of a boy who is torn between his religious convictions and his desire to fight for his country.

Robert Middleton, Walter Catlett, Marjorie Main and Theodore Newton are importantly cast in the story. Cooper has never been better I than as the father of the Birdwell i family, a hard-working farmer, "Friendly Persuasion," an Allied Artists De Luxe Color release, directed and produced by William Wyler. Based on the book by Jessamyn West. Presented at the Radio City Music Hall Theatre. Running time: 2 hours, 19 minutes.

Cooper's characterization is an ingratiating one. It is fundamentally serious, but tinged with a fine sense of earthy humor.

Dorothy McGuire is no less impressive in the mother role, as 'she rules the Birdwell household with a loving heart and a strict hand, bent on keeping her brood within the confines of their religious beliefs, since she is a minister of the Friends assembly. Samantha is sheer delight and so is young Richard Eyer, who took Wyler's direction so admirably in the latter's euspensa drama, "The Desperate Hours." All the roles are played with a persuasiveness that gives the film its comforting, warmly intimate quality. It is a picture that will be enjoyed by all the members of the family. The new revue on the Musle Hall stage features a spectacular sequin-spangled blues number entitled "Accent On Rhythm," with the Rockettes doing a eynchro-nized syncopated number to tha strains of "Shakin the Blues Away." Ann Gilbert, Danny Carroll and a new singing group, the Foursome, are featured in tha Russell Markert show. Center Changes Teahouse" Date City Center's revival of "The Teahouse of the August Moon" will open Thursday evening instead of on Wednesday, as originally announced.

The postponement was made in order to avoid conflict with the opening of O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey Into arriviner at the Helen Hayes Theatre on Wednesday Margaret 5arker has withdrawn from "The Happiest Millionaire" in favor of Ruth Matteson. at the Broadhurst Theatre, Miss; Russell returned in a comedy, 'Antie Mame," and this shining event made me reasonably happy, I would have been happy, indeed, if Miss Russell had returned in a revival of "The Best House in Naples," for she is a fabulously skillful and completely adorable comedienne. The play itself is an unstuck montage an adaptation by Jerome Lawrence and Kobert Lee of a novel by Patrick Dennis (a pseudonym) about an ageless nymph who raises a nephew from childhood to fatherhood without growing up one bit herself. A playgoer might as well for get about continuity when he goes to the Broadhurst and con centrate upon Miss Russell as she Blithers into a dozen or more changes of clothing and adjusts "A Wenderful Musical!"
