The Civil Air Patrol a civilian aux-Utary of the U.S. Air Force, has been la existence since 1M2. One of the mala functions of the Civil Air Patrol hat been to give emergency assistance. In the case of an air disaster, the Civil Air Patrol is limited to search over land.

Squadrons also are called out In weather emergencies to assist with tmntihagtfni or whatever Is needed. Emergency operations are facilitated by an extensive radio communication system, second In the United States only to that of nam operators. Here In Michigan, Civil Air Patrol headquarters Is based at Sd fridge Air Force Base. Locally, squadron 200G3 operates out of the Livingston County Airport under the direction of Captain Ted Williams, a squadron commander since 1977. Williams became interested In flying wbefl be was quite young, and following his father's example, became a licensed pilot In 1972.

Since then Williams has acquired a Piper Colt, his pride and Joy, and can always be found near airports sporting cap that states, "I'd rather be flying." He also Is licensed to fly several military aircraft at any Air Force base as part of his duties as commander of a Civil Air Patrol unit. Civil Air Patrol is open to anyone over the age of 12, and those members over 21 are referred to as senior members. Among the seven senior members in squadron 20003 Is Floyd Slough ton, whose wife got him The OvU Air Patrol," be said, "is something to enjoy, and yet do something worthwhile." Cadettes studying includes the 9 history of aviation and aerospace, military courtesy and customs. A chaplain is always on hand tor moral leadership letsous. Cadettes start out at the rank of Cadet le Basic, and rank Is earned, with tome cadettes reaching Colonel.

During weekends of testing, cadettes get the chance to show what they have learned and perhaps earn a new stripe. U. Colonel Jeff Arthur of Brighton has earned the highest rank In squadroo 2O003. Arthur, II, became Interested In the Civil Air Patrol when a recruiter came to bis seventh-grade class In Novt. Presently, Arthur works In the security department at Cars and Concepts and belongs to the Air Force Reserves.

Brian Kemppainen, 16, will travel to Illinois In July for a "solo encamp-ment," where be will study and attempt 0 a solo flight for the first time. "The Civil Air Patrol has taught me self-discipline and helped me a lot," be said. Future plans Include attending the U.S. Air Force Academy In Colorado and becoming a )et pilot. One female member of the unit, 16-year-old Heather Youngs of Howell, said she would also like to attend the academy someday.

0 During the summer months, cadettes often travel to places like Pennsylvania or Colorado for survival classes. Also, trips to Alpena, where the Air National Guard is stationed, are frequent. Members of squadron 20003 of the Livingston County Civil Air Patrol meet every Monday from p.m. at the Livingston County Airport. Clayton McDaniels and Janet Allen of Howell took first and second in the competition, respectively, while Hartland's Suzie Thumm finished third. Twenty-one bus driven from Livingston, Monroe and Washtenaw counties participated In the weekend competition at Brighton High School. The yearly event, in which bus drivers compete on an obstacle course, is sponsored by AAA of Michigan. Three other Howell bus drivers finished in the top 10. They are Kathy Bar-thel, Ton! Roberston and Lynn Witt The state rodeo competition is sponsored by the Michigan Depavtmtnt of Education.
