THE SUNDAY OKLAHOMAN 10-B SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2003 FOOTBALL SUNDAY Tigers stun Huskers Symons propels Tech past ISU Smith ties school mark with 4 TDs By R.B. Fallstrom AP Sports Writer COLUMBIA, Mo. After falling apart in a loss to Kansas, Missouri had two weeks to think about it. And to come up with an inventive game plan that helped the Tigers end a 24-game losing streak against 10th-ranked Nebraska. Symons was 45-of-65 for 487 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores as Texas Tech beat Iowa State 52-21 on Saturday night. Symons also committed all four of the Red Raiders' turnovers. Two of the turnovers led to Iowa State touchdowns.

He threw TD passes of 24, 9 and 6 yards and left the game with 8:30 remaining. It was the first time in four games that Symons did not get at least 500 passing yards. Tech (5-1, 2-0 Big 12) increased its winning streak to three games, while the Cyclones (2-4, 0-2) have lost four in a row. Symons spread his passes around, hitting nine receivers. Taurean Henderson caught nine passes for 52 yards, Wes Welker had eight for 76 yards and Carlos Francis had seven for 118 yards.

Henderson also ran for one touchdown and finished with 113 yards on 13 carries. Symons' performance broke an NCAA record for total offense in a four-game span set by Houston's David Klingler (2,276 yards) in 1990. Symons finished with 529 total yards Saturday night to set the record at 2,328. With the 487 yards passing against the Cyclones, Symons also topped the NCAA record (2,170) for passing yards over a four-game stretch that he set last week. He has 2,239 yards passing in the past four games.

He got 505 in Tech's 59-28 win over Texas last week, 661 yards in Tech's 49-45 win at Mississippi and 586 in the 49-21 loss at North Carolina State. By halftime, Symons had 308 yards on 28-of-39 passing. He fumbled twice and had a pair of passes intercepted all in the first half. Cyclone tailback Michael Wagner scored on a 25-yard run late in the first quarter to make it 7-7 after the first of Symons' fumbles, this one at Iowa State's 36. Missouri running back Zack Abron, left, tries to run past Nebraska's Barrett Ruud, right, and Josh Bullocks on a first-quarter touchdown run Saturday.

downs, and Missouri scored, twice Nebraska plays along 24 with opening up the offense for the first time all season in a 41-24 victory over the error-prone Huskers on Saturday night. "It's certainly my biggest win here," coach Gary Pinkel said. "What I'm going to suggest is it's pretty darned big." Nebraska (5-1, 1-1 Big 12) committed five turnovers in losing to Missouri (5-1, 1-1) for the first time since 1978, and for the first time at Faurot Field since 1973. Among the school's first sellout crowd in four seasons were several members of the last team to beat the Huskers, including coach Warren Powers. Fans tore down both goal posts after the game.

"Our fans have just been dying for something like that," athletic director Mike Alden said. Missouri trailed 24-14 in the third quarter before outscoring Nebraska 27-0 in the fourth. Nebraska entered the game with the nation's top-ranked defense and was coming off its first shutout in three seasons. "The bottom line is we all shared in this one," Nebraska coach Frank Solich said. "The turnovers were ridiculous." Missouri ended a 45-game losing streak against Top 10 teams dating to a 14-3 victory over No.

9 Mississippi State on Oct. 3, 1981. The Tigers, who scored on a throwback pass to Smith and a fake field goal, also ended a 20-game losing streak against Top 25 teams. "We were going to be aggressive in everything we did," Pinkel said. "We did a lot of stuff, and we felt we had to do those things." Smith rebounded from a poor outing in a 35-14 loss at Kansas two weeks ago that dropped Missouri from the Top 25.

He was 13-for-27 for 180 yards and his first two interceptions of year, making up for those errors with 123 yards on 18 carries plus a 47-yard touchdown reception off a lateral to Darius Outlaw. Since the Kansas loss, Pinkel has been telling Smith to relax. "He's been telling us for two weeks, 'Don't worry about your grade, don't worry about what anyone else says, just do what you Smith said. "Play ball and let it loose. "That's the type of offense we are." Nebraska had been allowing only 219 yards per game, but gave up 452 yards to Missouri.

In a nine-minute span of the fourth quarter, Missouri scored more points than the Huskers had allowed in a game all year. Solich said the fake field goal turned the game around. "They certainly swung the momentum around in the fourth quarter," Solich said. "That was the play that did it." The Aggies (3-3, 1-1 in Big 12) quickly brought Baylor (3-3, 1-1) back down from the Bears' 42-30 upset of Colorado last week with a 28-point second quarter for a 38-10 halftime lead. kept rolling with a big-play third quarter that included a 1-yard TD run by McNeal, the 91-yard pass from McNeal to Taylor, and Courtney Lewis' 86-yard run for his second TD of the day.

The Aggies scored their most points since beating Texas Christian 74-10 in 1986 and the Bears lost their 30th straight conference road game. Baylor's last league victory was in 1995 against Southwest Conference foe SMU. McNeal was 9-of-14 for 199 yards with no interceptions, and ran eight times for 61 yards. The Aggies had double 100-yard rushers for the first time since JaMar Toombs and Dante Hall in 1997. Lewis ran for 158 yards on 12 carries and Derek Farmer had 117 yards on 11 carries.

Baylor's Rashad Armstrong, the Big 12's leading rusher, gained 22 yards on 18 carries. The Aggies get warmed up until they got 28 points on Jax-son Appel's 64-yard interception return for a score, McNeal' 2-yard TD run, a 1-yard touchdown dive by Lewis and McNeal's 8-yard touchdown pass to Taylor. Taylor's TD catch came with 20 seconds left in the half and quickly answered Baylor's only touchdown of the game, a 37-yard pass from Aaron Karas to Marques Roberts moments earlier. 73 10 Texas Baylor COLLEGE STATION, Texas Reggie McNeal threw three touchdown passes, including a 91-yarder to Jamaar Taylor, and ran for two more scores as Texas snapped a three-game losing streak. But Kansas came roaring back, scoring 28 points in the second quarter. Whittemore's 38-yard pass to Simmons set up the quarterback's 7-yard run on a quarterback draw for a TD early in the second quarter.

Whittemore scored on a 1-yard run midway through the quarter. Colorado went ahead 24-21 on Klatt's 25-yard scoring toss to D.J. Hackett with 5:27 left, but Kansas scored twice after that. Clark Green turned a short pass into a 45-yard gain, and Green scored on a 9-yard run. Colorado appeared to be driving for a score when linebacker Nick Reid intercepted and returned 25 yards to the Colorado 45.

With one second remaining in the half and the ball on the Colorado 41, Whittemore threw deep and Charles Gordon caught the tipped ball in a crowd in the end zone. By John Mossman AP Sports Writer BOULDER, Colo. Brian Calhoun ran 12 yards for a touchdown in overtime, lifting Colorado to a 50-47 come-from-behind win over Kansas on Saturday. Colorado (3-3, 1-1 Big 12), rebounding from a 42-30 loss to Baylor last week, snapped a three-game losing streak.

Kansas (4-2, 1-1) had its four-game winning streak end. The Buffaloes rallied from deficits of 7-0, 35-24, 38-30 and 44-38 in a wide-open game that featured a combined 1,184 yards of total offense 598 by Colorado. Bill Whittemore passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more for Kansas. Colorado's Joel Klatt, making his first start since separating his shoulder against Washington State on Sept. 13, passed for two touchdowns and ran for one.

Colorado freshman Daniel Jolly ran for two third-quarter touchdowns to help the Buffs draw into a 38-38 tie. Jolly's scoring runs of 2 and 1 yard capped drives of 80 and 75 yards. Whittemore put the Jayhawks ahead again 44-38 on a 5-yard TD pass to Mark Simmons with 8:55 remaining in regulation, but Beck's extra-point attempt was blocked by Vance Washington. Colorado then fashioned two scoring drives resulting in field goals, producing a 44-44 tie. Mason Crosby hit a 41-yarder and 23-yarder, the last with 14 seconds remaining.

Colorado won the coin toss to start overtime and elected to go on defense, and Kansas had to settle for a field goal after Whittemore was dumped by tackle DeAndre Fluellen for a 1-yard loss on third-and-2 from the Colorado 17. On Colorado's possession, Calhoun ran for 9 and 4 yards before bolting for the clinching score. Whittemore passed for two scores and ran for two in the first half as Kansas took a 35-24 halftime lead, capped by a Hail Mary touchdown pass. Less than two minutes into the game, Whittemore hit Brandon Rideau on a 64-yard touchdown pass.
