In retro-retrospect, maybe the season opener wasn't such a swell spot for Oklahoma State to play at Nebraska.

The answer of who had the advantage OSU's veteran team riding the confidence and momentum from an eight-win season or Nebraska's squad, at home and with something to prove coming off the embarrassment of the school's worst season in four decades was clear. Now we know. OSU's touted offense appeared ill-prepared for a big-game challenge, shut out over the final 51 minutes Saturday in a 17-7 loss. "We should have scored more than seven points," said Cowboys receiver Rashaun Woods, who had his worst game in more than a season. "It's very disappoint ing.

The weather Saturday turned stunningly cool here in the Heartland. So By George Schroeder Staff Writer NORMAN Two plays best defined top-ranked Oklahoma's 37-3 romp past North Texas on Saturday night. As an Owen Field-record 83,073 fans watched, a retro-clad band of Sooners answered several preseason questions. And those two plays told the story. Neither counted.

Early in the third quarter, with the eventual outcome already long decided, OU faced fourth-and-six from the North Texas 30. Pressured heavily, Jason White scrambled left, then threw a dart on the run to Travis Wilson, who spun away from defenders and into the end zone. The play was called back for holding. But it appeared to serve notice that the senior quarterback had fully recovered from knee surgery and any residual rust. White completed 23 of 35 passes for 248 yards, with three touchdowns and one late interception.

But perhaps the biggest question going into a season filled with sky-high expectations whither White? might have been answered on that play. "He looked like his old self out there creating some plays," OU coach Bob Stoops said. The quintessential Mean Green moment occurred earlier, when quarterback Scott Hall's desperation fling as he avoided heavy pressure found Nick Zu-niga wide-open. In the Memorial Stadium temple where a state worships a sport, Oklahoma State and Nebraska both played themselves out of title contention.

OK, OK. You're right. That's not fair. OSU still could rally to the summit. That's what was so maddening for the Cowboys on Saturday.

In the snakepit where few squadrons emerge with hair on their head, OSU could have won without a benchmark performance. Nebraska is nothing special. That's hard to say about kind souls who, other than the scoreboard, treat visitors so well. And it's dang near impossible to utter for those of us reared watching the Corn machine churn out quality football decade after decade. But it's the truth.
