voice my opposition to the bill now before the Legislature to increase -the gasoline tax another two cento I think the present tax of four1 cents is plenty high and to add two cents more would work a hardship on those least able to bear It Many wage workers and farmers are now driving 10 or 20 mites from where they live to the place where they work Another two cents per gallon on their gasoline bill would in the course of a year materially Increase their cost of living note: Texans now pay four cents per gallon state tax plus 1 cents per gallon federal tax for a total id 5V4 cents per gallon of gasoline purchased A bill before the Legislature would increase the stale tax from Uie present four cents to six cents) The upkeep of cars pickups and trucks without the cost of gasoline is a sizable amount as those who operate them well know The farmer and laboring man would be hit and hurt the worst because they emdd not as many others could pan the tax oo to others But some say let those who use the highways the most pay the most for their upkeep It would be almost as logical to argue that those parents or families who have the most children in school pay the most school taxes I think the highways like the schools benefit everybody in some way and that their upkeep should not be left mainly to only those who use them Instead of more tax on gasoline why not more tax on soft drinks millions id bottles of which are consumed here in our state each year I take my hat off to Rep Jerry Sadler who is waging a vigorous and forceful fight to kill this bilL HARRIS Burkett $6130 in
