The Purdue Boilermakers, winners of the last three Big 10 basketball titles, were supposed to be Oklahoma's first tough test of the season Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center. Tough what? The unbeaten (7-0) Sooners had little trouble pounding Purdue 82-58 before 10,846 fans and an ESPN audience. It was OU's largest crowd since Oklahoma State's visit last year. The 24-point setback is the Boilers' most lopsided loss since 1992, when Indiana beat them 106-65. Purdue's worst defeats during this 5-4 season had been by 14 (101-87) to No.

Purdue coach Gene Keady believes OU has grown a lot since last year, when the Sooners lost at Purdue 77-63. "They've got a good ballclub. I knew they'd be better than last year," Keady said. The Hornets have two-sport standout Ryan Humphrey at tight end, with lineman Darryl Bright and secondary man B.J. Tiger on defense. The echoes continue with the naming of the The Oklahoman's 1996 All-State Team, which features four representatives from Jenks' 6A title team, including Cory Callens and Allan Trimble the 45th annual squad's Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. Callens was a force at defensive end for the Trojans, compiling 116 tackles and 19 sacks as the state's premier pass rusher. He's joined on defense by linemate Jason Lohr, the only junior on the squad and another member of a unit that ravaged opposing offenses.

Josh Fidler ran for 1,335 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Jenks offense in seven games for the Trojans before injuries shortened his season. Still, he deserves an All-State spot somewhere, and is the punter, after he capably handled all kicking duties for the Trojans. Trimble, who directed Jenks to a championship in his head coaching debut, rounds out the Trojan quartet. Seminole's Jarrod Reese is the Offensive Player of the Year, after leading the Chieftains to a 14-0 record and the 3A championship. He produced 2,716 yards of total offense and 30 touchdowns while earning a reputation as a big-game gunslinger.
