Distance Crown Awaits It takes a large crown to sit on horse's head, but after today' Pauls Valley Handi cap, one horse will experience i perfect fit. The distance title is up for grabs and the Pauls Valley winner likeh will be the champ.

Robert Gentry and L.A. Scher winski's Tricky Cash shoots fo; his third straight. He took advan tage of an inside post and held of Miami Prince in the Jim Thorp Handicap. The John Buchanar trainee will be out in the No. post in today's 870-yard headliner Dan Vines' Smashed Pride trained by Derrick Sessions, de feated many of these same oppo nents in the Remington Park Dis tance Handicap on April 20.

Robert Rasor's Miami Prince trained by Bob Pogue, won the Remington Challenge Handicap on March 29. He's bidding for his third straight distance title. Perhaps the most intriguing entrant is Bobby Cox's Assured Dash, who will break out of the No. 2 post. He's making his first 870 try this season after an impressive win scored at 550 yards.

Jerry Shottenkirk Claimers Score Big Quarter horse claimers got their day to shine Friday as Remington Park carded the $32,490 MBNA Challenge Starter Allowance at 350 yards. All starters had raced for a $5,000 claiming price or less, and they qualified for the final through trials on May 8. Fresh Red, whom owner-trainer Toby Keeton claimed for $5,000 on April 13, is now 2-for-2 for Keeton and perfect in three starts after a half-length win over Don. Francisco and Secret Specialist. The 6-year-old Streakin Six gelding went the distance in :18.04.

Fresh Red earned $16,245, which is half of what he'd won through eight wins in 26 prior starts. "He was a nice horse -when we claimed him and we thought that he could pick off some races for us," Keeton said. "We didn't know he was already nominated to the Challenge. We found that out later. It became a much better claim then." Big Upset in 11th The 11th figured to be a two-horse race between unbeaten Dr Honnas and talented Carrion The Cash, but there was quite a surprise when it was over.

Hoss Colours ($46.20 to -win) and LL Cash ($50.40 to place) combined for a 10-5 exacta payoff of 2,621.40. Srsemorei Trainer: David Cook. By David Morris Staff Writer Like in any sibling rivalry, Wendell Simmons has received a lot of advice from his older brother. This year, the younger Simmons passed along some advice of his own. "I told him to get off his kids' butts. Let them have fun and they'll win him a World Series," said Simmons, coach of Central Oklahoma's baseball team.

"What's the odds? Two brothers, same day, same time both in a college world series." Simmons will coach the Bronchos in their first NCAA Division II World Series appearance. No. 6 UCO (39-19) faces No. 5 Central Missouri State (38-11) at 1 p.m. today in Montgomery, Ala.

His older brother Lloyd Simmons will coach the Seminole State Trojans in his record 11th NJCAA World Series. The Trojans (55-3) play Columbia State. (39-16) at 11 a.m. today in Grand Junction, Colo. Seminole has yet to win a World Series.

Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts in their respective time zones. Both tournaments run through Sunday, May 31, "We grew up playing baseball together," said Wendell Simmons, who earned his first South-Central Region and second Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year (1994, ''J7J awards. "Ho coached ino in college. Baseball has always been a family deal, Our dad played baseball for a lot of years.

Wo took up where ho left off. "Lloyd's always given me advice. He's been to so many." Despite returning eight starters, UCO lost its No. 1 pitcher, Justin Bernard, to spinal surgery and two other players before Christinas, "We thought it was going to be a pretty good year. But we had tough luck iind lost three main players before Christmas," said Simmons, 170-141 in six years at UCO.

First baseman Jarred McAl-vain leads the team with 92 RBIs, shattering the school record of 58 by Bob Bailey in 1983. Both Koerner and McAlvain have 13 home runs, two shy of the school mark of 15 (Eddie Jeffcoat, '94). Both were named to the All South-Central Region first team. Second baseman Ryan Haley, riding a 23-game hitting streak, earned second-team honors. All three have broken the school mark for hits in a season (77, by Rodney Foster, '94).

"Last year everybody pitched around Pat," Simmons said. "He didn't get a chance to drive in runs. Now, with Ryan Haley in the two-hole and Jarred McAlvain in the five-hole, they've had to pitch to him. They had to pitch to somebody." While Simmons sports a career rnnord of 617-305 in 19 ynars of high school and college baseball instructing, his brother is the all-time winningest junior college baseball coach. Lloyd Simmons, was inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Hall of Fame at the World Series banquet Friday.

His Trojans have tied the school mark with liR wins. Under Simmons the Trojans have twice finished as national runners-u (1981, '82).
