Notre Dame officials scheduled a news conference for this afternoon to name the new coach. School officials refused to say who it is. Both Fox Sports Net and television station WNDU reported Monday night that Doherty had been hired.

Doherty, 37, played forward on North Carolina's 1982 national championship team with Michael Jordan and James Worthy. He's been an assistant at Kansas for seven seasons. Last weekend's Final Four semifinal games provided more of the same for CBS: Lackluster contests and ratings that continue to fall. Saturday night's games each dropped 10 percent from last year's overnight ratings. The tournament to date, with a 6.3 rating and 14 share, is down 5 percent from last season.

Pro Basketball A federal judge in San Francisco dismissed Latrell Sprewell's lawsuit against the NBA that stemmed from the year-long suspension levied against him for choking his coach. Besides dismissing the suit, Judge Vaughn Walker ordered Sprewell now with the New York Knicks and his attorneys to pay the legal costs of the NBA. Sprewell sought payment from the NBA for ah the money he lost including endorsements after being suspended for attacking Golden State Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo in December 1997. Baseball Atlanta Braves closer Kerry Ligtenberg, who took over the job last season when Mark Wohlers had control problems, said he will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn elbow ligament.

Wohlers, meanwhile, appears to be coming back. He has been impressive in his last few appearances, and manager Bobby Cox said Wohlers likely will be the team's top closer when the season opens. Darryl Strawberry's return to the New York Yankees from colon cancer was put on hold. Strawberry, who is still undergoing chemotherapy, will remain at extended spring training when the Yankees open the season next week. San Diego Padres left-hander Mark Lang-ston, who finally made it to the World Series last year after 15 seasons and 432 appearances, announced his retirement.

Pat Jarvis, a former Atlanta Braves pitcher and ex-DeKalb County, sheriff, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for using his office to profit from county contractors. Jarvis, who pleaded guilty in January to a federal mail fraud charge, was also fined $40,000. Prosecutors contend Jarvis pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who did business with DeKalb County. Jarvis, 57, pitched for the Braves for eight years starting in 1966. Newfom 2-3.
