The Putnam City School Board unanimously approved pay raises for the entire district Monday night. The salary increase cost is $5,555,725 a cost agreed to by the administration and the Putnam City Association of Classroom Teachers. In addition to the $3,000 raises granted by the state Legislature to all certified personnel in the state, the teachers will receive $225 more toward retirement. The median salary increase will be around 10 percent. The exact percentage depends on each employee's years of service.

Earlier this month, the board approved raises of 9 percent for support staff and 8 percent for administrators. The board also approved a measure allowing teachers who are enrolled in the district health insurance plan to receive $278.16 to help offset increasing costs. Piedmont Schools Superintendent Gary Johnson said an open house will be hosted from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Tuesday at the school, 1055 Edmond Road. Refreshments and tours of the building will be given to visitors, Johnson said. "It's a chance to tour through the building because not many have seen it yet," he said. Administrators hosted a ribbon cutting Aug. 15 to officially open the school.

Ninth-grade students began attending classes there Aug. 17. Construction of the 32-room school was complete in February. The three-phase project is funded by a $4.4 million bond issue passed in 1998. Phase one of the project is finished.

That phase of the project, which included the parking lot and carpeting, began in March 1999. Bids for phase two of the project will be opened in the Sept. 11 school board meeting. The second phase of the project, which includes the cafeteria and added classrooms, is set for completion in the summer of 2001, Johnson said. Until the cafeteria is finished, the students' lunches will be delivered and they will eat in the commons area.

Once the entire project is complete in 2002, the school is expected to house grades nine through 12.
