Lee Trevino, the hottest player on the Senior PGA Tour, will participate in a benefit at SilverHorn Golf Club on Wednesday.

Trevino, the talkative Texan who now lives in South Florida, has won the last two Senior events The Tradition and the PGA Seniors Championship and also owns a victory at the March 12-15 Vantage at the Doniinion. Heading into this weekend's Legends tournament, he had a Tour-leading $397,229 in official money, $133,598 more than Chi Chi Rodriguez. Gallery tickets for the 9 a.m. shotgun start are $10 and are available at all Bentley Hedges Travel locations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Gallery parking is at Remington Park with a shuttle providing transportation to SilverHorn.

Tickets also are good for admission to the track that day. Oklahoma Sooner coaches Gregg Grost and Ludvigson have taken a unique approach in joining talents to stage their first Oklahoma Golf Academy from June 14-19. "The first time I'd seen a coed camp was last summer at Arizona State," said Grost. "I taught for Steve Loy out there, and he and the women's coach do them together. "It really surprised me, but I thought it was a pretty good idea, so I talked to Carol about it and we decided to do the same thing." Their feature staffers are Arizona coach Rick LaRose, who had two of his Wildcat players in the Masters this year, and TCU's Kristi Ar-ney.

Oklahoma City University will hold its annual fund-raiser May 11 at SilverHorn Golf Club. Coach Glen Fowler said the 2-man, best-ball event will be followed by an auction, with rounds of golf at area country clubs, golf clubs, fishing trips and other items up for bids. Fowler's Chiefs, ranked sixth in the NAIA, will be favored to win the District 9 tournament, which will be held Monday and Tuesday at Lincoln Park. OCU was favored at Heritage Hills in Clare-more last year, but gave up a 7-stroke lead over the final nine holes and lost to Northeastern by three strokes. The Chiefs rebounded to finish second in the national tournament at Twin Hills.

When Fred Couples made, the cut Friday in this weekend's Greater Greensboro Open it extended his Tour-leading streak to 29 tournaments. Byron Nelson holds the record with 113 consecutive cuts made in the 1940s and Jack Nicklaus had a streak of 105 from 1970 to 1976. GOLF Magazine took a look at fashion on the PGA Tour and proclaimed former Oklahoma Sooner Andrew Magee "the new By Mac Bentley Staff Writer Oklahoma State's Cowboys and Cowgirls are expected to win Big Eight golf championships in Kansas this week. The conference tournaments will be held Monday and Tuesday, the men at the prestigious Prairie Dunes Country Club near Wichita and the women at Manhattan Country Club. Both events will see 36 holes played Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

Mike Holder, who calls Prairie Dunes "the finest golf course that any of these kids will play in their collegiate careers," has seen his Cowboys win the last seven Big Eight tournaments and 32 of the last 34. They won by 30 strokes in 1990 and by 28 last season. The fourth-ranked Pokes, though, have not won a team title this year, posting four runner-up finishes. They've never won less than three events in Holder's previous 18 seasons as coach. The Cowboys' string of medalists was snapped at five last season when Tulsan Matt Gogel, the 1990 Oklahoma state amateur champion, was the individual champion.

He's struggled some in his second season at Kansas, however, and enters this week's tournament with the highest stroke average 75.4 in the Jayhawk lineup. Also returning from last year's tournament is runner-up Craig Hainline of OSU and 4-5-6-7 Finishers Patrick Lee of OU, Jaxon Brigman of OSU, Pat McCormick of Iowa State and CaryCozby of OU. Ann Pitts' Cowgirls have won 10 of the last 16 women's tournaments, but had a 6-year winning streak snapped with a 2-stroke loss to Kansas in 1990. Oklahoma won last year's event, defeating OSU by three strokes. The OSU women are ranked third nationally and are a virtual certainty to qualify for the May 27-30 NCAA tournament at Tempe, Ariz.

It's a different story for the Sooner women, who are ranked 19th and have only an outside chance of qualifying for the NCAA tournament, which takes the top 14 teams from a formula-driven ranking system and three at-large teams. "We're definitely sitting on the bubble," said OU coach Carol Ludvigson. "We would have to win (the Big Eight), I think, with some really low scores. I don't want to say we don't have a chance, but it will be difficult." OU's since-graduated Cathy Stevens was the Big Eight medalist last year. Dan Hampton, the former Chicago Bears defensive lineman out of Arkansas, has been added to the list of sports celebrities who will participate in Monday's Jim ThorpeNFL Players Charity Golf Classic at Oak Tree Country Club.

It's the third annual event sponsored by the Jim Thorpe Association and the local chapter of the NFL Players Association. Galleries are wel- come, said Jim Thorpe Association director Lynne Draper Jr. Other late entries include Tracey Eaton, Falcons safety; Chris Verhulst, Broncos tight end; and Grant Feasel, Seahawks center. Among the celebrities announced previously are Tony Casillas, Bob Fenimore, Gary Gibbs, Rusty Hilger, Ferguson Jenkins, Pat Jones, Steve Largent, Terry Miller, Steve Owens, Greg Pruitt, Allie Reynolds, Eddie Sutton, Barry Switzer, Clendon Thomas and Joe Washington. Also expected to be on hand is Buffalo Bills running back Thurman Thomas, who will receive the Jim Thorpe Trophy as the NFL's most valuable player in 1991.

The trophy dates back to 1955 and is the only MVP award determined by a vote of the players. Last year's winner was Houston Oiler quarterback Warren Moon. Thomas was scheduled to be in Waco Saturday night for induction into the Texas High School Hall of Fame. Proceeds from the event go to the Jim ThorpeOklahoma Hall of Fame projects, the Make a Wish program, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation wing at Southwest Medical Center.
