Phone: 840-3661 By Michael McNutt Enid Bureau KINGFISHER A Kingfisher County man who eluded law officers for more than five years after escaping from jail was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison. Paul Eugene Stamper was caught last fall after being featured on a national television show.

He pleaded guilty to escape charges and three others he was to stand trial on at the time of the 1986 escape. District Judge Richard W. Pickens sentenced Stamper to 30 years in prison on each charge, and ordered that Stamper be placed on five years probation after his release from prison. The sentences are to be served at the same time. In addition to escape, Stamper pleaded guilty to kidnapping, shooting with intent to kill and feloniously carrying a firearm.

He had been held in a maximum security cell at the Kingfisher County Jail since arrested in October after an account of his crimes was featured on the NBC-TV series, "Unsolved Mysteries." Stamper, 37, was arrested in Commerce City, within hours after the telecast. Federal authorities said they received more than 300 calls about the show. When he escaped, Stamper was being held on charges of kidnapping his estranged wife and shooting her male companion near Dover, OK. Authorities said Stamper rigged a rented car to look like a law enforcement vehicle and pulled over the car driven by his estranged wife and her boyfriend.
