eaMii0 fails Cint es. We have received the hrst number of the State Journal, a large double sheet weekly newspaper, published in rhiladel phia by the State Journal Company." The stock of the Association comprises 1000 shares, which are valued at '20 each, thus giving a capital of $20,000, with which to conduct the sheet. It will advocate the causa of the Republican party, but its different departments will be adapted, as nearly as can be, to the different wants of the family circle, that and young, son and daughter, may each find in its ample columns something to interest and, possibly, to instruct them," The price of the Journal is 2 a year. Advertising Sheriff's Sales. A recent sale by the Sheriff under a writ of Levari Facias of some 800 acres of land in Steuben township, was set aside by the Court as illegal and invalid, because said sale had not been advertised in hundbill form.

The custom in this county has been of posting slips printed in common newspaper type, all the sales being advertised upon The same bill. The Court decides that this way of doing business does great injustice to the person whose lands are about to be sold, and that each sale must be printed separately, in ban bill type, and of "readable size. Mead ville Paper. For many it has been customary to advertise Sheriff's sales in one or more newspapers of the county in which the property to be sold is located, but if the above decision is correct, all of the sales were illegal, and if it is sustained by the entire Judiciary of the State, a large number of our property holders will find themselves in a perplexing position. Their purchase under Sheriff's writ will be declared void, and indeed all the actions of that functionary have been necessarily illeg.il.

The lawyers must reap ci golden harvest in the future, if the decision 6f the learned Judge is sound. On Wednesday morning, a brutal murder was committed in Chester county, near the White Horse Hotel, the victim of which was a Mr. Reed, a well known and respected citizen, who had made his home at the White Horse for many years. An Irishman, having, as is supposed, been drinking, commenced abusing Mr. Reed, who paid no attention to him, until the Irishman attempted to inflict blows along with his abuse.

Mr. Reed, being a strong man, then caught the Irishman, threw him down and held him there until he promised to behave himself. Subsequently, however, the Irishman followed Mr. Reed up the road some distance, threw a stone which struck his victim on the head, knocking him down senseless, and, it is supposed, killed him on the spot. Not content with this, however, the infuriated demon stabbed him in several places and then jumped upon the body, disfiguring the face in a shocking manner.

The most singular feature of this affair is that the transaction was witnessed by several workmen in an adjoining field, and a negro who was close by, Lut they were afraid to interfere lest the Irishman should turn upon them He ran away some distance, when courage was finallv mustered to overtake and arrest him, when he was lodged in prison. It is said that a composition of cam phene and turpentine is the best mixture to use for drilling boles into glass with a file drill. The drill is kept constantly wet with the solution, which appears to give it more "bite" than turpentine alone. A well known citizen of Cincinnati went home in a state of intoxication on Tuesday last, and was so abusive to his family that bis daughter seized a knife and stabbed him in a dangerous manner. On Monday last, an employee of the Lykens Valley Railroad Company, named Peter Minnich, met with a serious accident a few miles east of Millersburg.

A locomotive was approaching the place where he was working, and in attempting to leave the track, he was struck by the cow catcher, and bad his left foot and ankle so horribly crushed that it was found necessary to amputate the leg just below the knee. The Agricultural Societies of Montgo mery, Chester, Bucks and Philadelphia bounties, have it in contemplation to es tablish a model farm in one of the four named counties, convenient to the city, with botanic gardens attached. A convention of delegates from these counties is to assemble to consider the matter, and the Montgomery society has already chosen her representatives. The American Farmer's JIayazine, an agricultural periodical, published in New York by J. H.

Nash, has been discontinued for want of means to sustain it. The proprietor has been in business a year and a half, and closes his editorial career with unpaid subscriptions amounting to five thousand dollars honestly due him. The report that has been going the rounds of the newspnpers that Mr. Rigby, an engineer from Georgia, in the employ of the Havana Railway Company, had been having caused, through carelessness or negligence, a train under his charge to run off the railway, whereby the lives of several persons were sacrificed, is incorrect. It appears that some three or four months ago, from the bad state of repair in which a portion of the railway then was, the hinder cars of a train under Mr.

Rigby's charge got off the track, whereby a brakeman's thigh was smashed. Two or three weeks after this, Mr. Rigby was placed in prison and kept there twenty four days. He was also fined 100 and these circumstances were exaggerated into the story that the engineer had been garroted. Public Sale.
