Sniff WENDESDAY, FEBRUARY 80th, 1807. Reading, Feb. 20. Nobli non licet esse tarn vitiis Qui Musas collmus. Ifartial.

CMC oh! how faint, how weak, Language fadeg before thy spell I Whv should Feelins ever soeak. 1 When thou cans't breathe her soul so well? Friendship' balmy words may feign, Lore's are e'en more false than they; Oh 'tis only Music's strain Can sweetly soothe and not betray I Moore. In these enlightened times in which we i lire, it is hardly possible that it should be left for the "Club" to inculcate into the minds of our people the necessity of the cultivation of music. Yet it is a subject of im portance and it is one of the objects of the "Club" to elevate the character of our citizens, whether, that deration can be obtained by cultivation of the fine arts or the gentler graces of the heart. From the earliest ages of antiquity in every land Music has been held in esti niation.

The savage, beats bis drum and shakes his bear claw rattle and his savage nature is stirred. The Ethiopian, untu torod, upon the sands of his native land chants his wild refrain; or half civilized, in our own country, sings his plantation mcl odies, and the dusky, son of the South hi melted by the music of his' own creation. David sang before the Lord the render up their praise in song and in our weekly offerings at the shrine of the Deity we mingle with our prayers our songs of praise. The giddy bell of the ball room and the stern man of business, the guile less child and the orator who has held thousands captive with his eloquence, all, all melt to tears under the creations of Beethoven and Mendelsohn and Rossini; Von Weber, Bellini, Handel, Mozart' and Hayden. At all festivities and gaieties we enliven our very life with music.

We celebrate the Savior's natal day witkChristmas anthems and all goes merry as a marriage bell" as the blushing bride is led from the altar mid the strains of the wedding march. As we consign a sister or a brother to the tomb, we blend the earthly with the heavenly by the power of music; and in the hour of death the spirit floats away upon the wings of earthly melody, and as the last note dies upon the silent air, the still Bess which follows only precedes the bursting forth of the eternal song of "Moses and the Lamb." What marvelous effect too in i the bugle and the drum as the hero march el on to battle, and even the restive war horse steps with statelier 1 And when the battle is over Bnd won, the wounded soldier forgets his pains, as he rises upon his arms to catch the strains of victory. Language is powerful yet all cannot understand, books are useful yet all cannot read, but every ear and every heart is open to music's charms. It brings the saint nearer to his God, it awakens conscience in the sin stained heart. It is the sweet surging of the waves of eternity upon the shore of time, and the power to create or enjoy music is that attribute in man which links him to the Divinity, and is one of the Joys of Eden that survived the fill.

When Mlr abeau came to die, his last words were, "Let me die to the sounds of delicious nau sic." It is unnecessary to dwell further on the charms of that which has a charm for all, but let us rather argue that if musk ft capable of ennobling, purifying or elevating the soul, that effect should be increased by cultivation. In our city there is not suf flcient attention paid to the subject of music. We number thirty five thousand inhabitants. In this vast concourse of souls we have perhaps a dozen music teachers, one orchestra, two bands and one musical association. To them be gi.ven their Just meed of praise.

But we should do more, and it is the lntcrest'of every parent that we should do more. Ofhauntsofviceand in iquity, alas! we hare too Of inno cent amusement for the young we have too few. The proprietors of saloons recognize the powers of music by adding it to their incentives to allure the young. The youth escaped from the toils of the day is drawn into the beer house by the strains of music and time and money are squandered and evil nanus lormea. Why do not parents render home more attractive by adding to Its pleasures the cultivation of music.

few dollars will boy yous son a violin, your daughter a guitar. A few dollars will pro. vide them with vocal or instrumental in struction. The money will be bread cast upon the waters and will return ere many days elapse. Besides, you cultivate the mental powers of your children, why not cultivate their physical powers? The study of vocal music strengthens, develops and alarges the lungs.

Assume an erect posture, inflate the cells of the lungs with air and breathe it out slowly through the organs of articulation and you strengthen the lungs and improve the voice. If you have incipient symptoms of throat disease, do not be a fool and go to some old granny or Indian doctor, and waste time, life and money In experimenting on red pepper tea or soup, made by Bhakspeare's witches or Werst frau" ointment on All cumstonton salve, but take instruction in vocal music, and, our word for it, you will be wiser in so doing. In every human voice there are three parts or divisions called reg isters. The tones from the lowest note the person can produce, up to are called the eheit register. The tones from on the clef, up to are called the middle register, and from up to the highest note that each can sing, form the head register.

The tones the medium or middle register, are those most frequently used In speaking, and in cultivating them you render the voice musical, and, perhaps, destroy a squeak, or nasal tone, that would otherwise render yonr conversation unpleasant to all around you Besides, there are still more forcible rea ions for cultivating the voice. Fortune is fickle, and while we may bask In her smiles to day, to morrow she may frown upon us. Riches mar flee away and leave us depend eat on our' own exertions for our daily bread; how many have wished, when In this situation, that they had cultivated their musical tas'es aud abilities, And how many have been compelled to turn so pccouiplish uicut into ft profession. In every family there exists some fine voice Your son may possess the foundation of a rich bass, or clarion tenor; your daugBter may have a One soprano, or mellow contralto. The latter class are most rare, and, when found, should bo cultivated.

The effect of a fine contralto is grand and sonorous the full and mellow tones of the mezzo soprano have an effect equalled by no Instrument bat (he harmnnv when all are blended the'ltTn whelming effect of the chorus hjotmi Jrs arIgnlnt op1 fact that a deba our only idea of the music of spbjerosf 'tfcig stetWjxiSts our Ifldst; if not, and gives us our idea of thosskrapbfti tsu thorns that swell up around the throne oi Grace. Thejjffect surpasses any.tb(,ngjnan can produce. It is said, that when Handel's magnificent oratorio of The Mesi ah" was first performed, the audience were exceedingly affected, and when the chorus, "For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth," burst upon, their ears they, 'together England'! their seats and remained standingtrausfiatted holy awe, until the chorus was Such is the powor of music upon the soul. In possessing the gift of a fine there is a talent given us which we should not bury, but improve to the best of our ability. Let our citizens encourage their sons and daughters in the cultivation of vocal aad in strumental music, or we will be consselled to blush with shame when comparing our progress wuu tnai oi me people oi tne eas tern The effect will evqn be seen in the" character of the audiences at our musical entertainments, in the character of our church music, in the self respect and morality of our people, and in the, (Christian graces Which are begotten of a pure heart, a culti vated mind and refined, tastes, but which without the necessary culture, will wither ana aie, iiKe me ueiicaic exotic jrom distant lands, when In an atmosphere repugnant tolls nature, i Conceit.

I sometimes hear my female blends speak "that true modesty is an element of true that it "is a true charm, this perfect unconsciousness, and that they never admire a great manj bc he scholar, poet or artistWithout it." 1 Now I havent been long 1n the world.at least, not as long as some people that speak So; yet I have heard a great deal about this perfect unconsciousness, I have never seen it. I have read in novels of radlently beautiful 'Women, Who never knew they looked well, and irresistibly fascinating men, who unconsciously captivated every body, because they help it; but I don't meet any such men and women walk! ing about. It is quite difficult for a person who owns a good looking glass, and a good pair of ears, not to see and to hear about it, if he is handsome. We Americans must make such a fuss about everything, fences and barns and cars and curb stones, book cov and fans.cven wagons and wayside rocks are plastered bver with advertisements of something new and wonderful. There is somebody! name on everything.

The chief aim of the' people is to get their name Our almanacs guides to in fallable weather decisions, must be'labelled "guides to health," which means a guide to some polychrestlan physician, who cures everything, with some universal life invig erator. I don't despair yet, of seeing some of the pure energy of vital action done up and for sale in boxes of salve, rolls of plaster, and hottleS of lotion, warranted to be made from a powdered philosopher's stone, of purely vegetable origin, by a perpetual moving machine, circulating among all the crowned heads of Europe and Asia, Everything Is used as an advertising the sky over our' heads, there are no car actures up their yet but if a "balloon could ever get up so high, some enterprlsiig Yankee medicine vender would be for sending one of his posters up there, to fasten notices on some starry promintory, or sur burban gates of some constellated city, to introduce among the bulls and bears of those shining streets, his valuable speculation; and benefit those upper circles by his phllantrophic lotions, seeing that his sands of life have nearly run but. It a man praise any article to me, I begin jo suspect he has some In his pocket to sell. Once upon a time a certain druggist gave me a whole bottle of Hair Invigorator, for which liberal gift I could see no occasion but some time time thereafter the donor called on me, wishing me to give my name to be inscribed on the outside of each bottle of Invigorator, in testimony of its virtues. I laughed till I cried, at the thought of it Ella going round on a Hair Invigorator bottle.

I never wish to see my name in print I am married. But I do say that a well and carefully polished thought, deserves the acknowledgement of its original stamp, far more than those bottles of nondescript perfume marked Paritienne, adoptee par monle elegant 13 Rue Enghier 13 Pari, with white kid caps and fancy ribbon neck ties, marked sometimes "Bouquet de Car. oline." they might better be called "Boouet de or "Boquct de Sallle," for they have no memories of outre mer and those sheets of cream laid note note paper, with "Paris" carefully stamped in one cor ner, have no gay Parisian associations, but authentic memories of their native Amcri canraga. I have often wondered, as our Bridget says, how they can put such deceitful coun tenances on their fair faces and even a gen the estimation of many ladicsisao half finished or polished, or worth having, unless he has been to Europe and back with Paris marked all over him gloves, and all be must eat, sleep, walk, talk, dress and bow a la Franeaiu, and dance well let Lander. 1 I am glad there is something can clrcu late, even in fashionable society, without full dress, white kids, and French manners and that is a plain drab covercd book or a poem And no bars or bolts, or conven tionalities shall keep plain Jane Eyre from telling her thrilling tale of Thornfleld Hall, in stateliest mansion, to princely ears.

You might as well put gloves and slippers on a canary, advertise a violet, recommend a mipnionette, or puff a star through the mur ket.ai try to puff a genuine thought through the world. iuu A star will shine and a bright thought will burn and shine somewhere, if only In one dark heart UttV is a glorious destiny, for when the heart beats up there, the thought goes with it. Each great thought as it comes from the press of 4he soul, has an imported stamp not of gay Paris but on each noble thought is imprinted in legible type, the stamp Heaven for every such good and perfect gift down from the Father of Light, from the city be yond the stars. It is a pity we couldn't get mors of the patrons of our thoughts from the royal family above. But don't you want a moral, reader, to all this rhodomontadef If a man's name con be appropriately attached, to everything, from a tin pan to a telescope, he can write a good book or make a good picture, and know it, without being called conceited.

I wouldn't sjive a fig for a man unless he thought be could do something. A man can nvr accomplish anything he fuels there is something in blin to begin ith. Don't you suppose, Dear Reader, that if a rock had a soul.lt would know itf if a star could think; wouldn't it know it was a star? if a flower could feel, wouldn't it be conscious it was a flowerf and every gran ite truth, starry thought and flowery fancy, sees its faithful shadow, in the reflecting fountain oltt nativ soul, our rea tly.hikts..kj grnit.baiJittle atten tion. During the winter months a number of our young men, in connection with the students of the People's Business College, formed a debating society. They organized with a full determination to succeed, and they can take credit to themselves for having accomplished what they undertook.

It is needless for us to ljh portance of such an organization! for it is only regret that there are pot more of these societies1, where young "men can eo and improve their minds, instead of wasting their time in are more of an injury than a benefit to them.
