WWLS-AM 640. By Steve Serby New York Daily News PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. The story behind the storied Mets phenom begins in the town of Anardarko, OK, where a grandmother named Virginia Barton made sure her grandson was going to have a chance to end up on the right side of the tracks. He was 10 or 11 and running with the wrong crowd, with little hope to be someone.

So Virginia Barton, who raised the boy, finally sent him to live with his father, a policeman in nearby Lawton, and Butch Huskey started to dream of better things. Butch Huskey, who has as much future as any of the young and coming Mets, has a chilling idea of what might have happened if Virginia Barton hadn't stepped up. "I'd probably be a hoodlum on the streets," Huskey says. He is a 21-year-old wunderkind, a 1989 All-State football and baseball player at Lawton Eisenhower High School who reminds Mets manager Jeff Torborg of Frank Thomas, the White Sox's slugger. He has won three games for the Mets this spring, one with a Frank Howard line-drive home run, and will win plenty more someday at Shea Stadium.

All these years later, all these miles from home, Butch Huskey can still hear the cheers of his boyhood friends supply instant leadership when he becomes a regular with the Mets. Torborg tells of a recent night when Huskey was playing with the veterans and not at all shy about screaming, "Let it go! Let it go! Let it go!" on a bunt. "He's got presence on the field," Torborg says. The organization believes he will be a better third baseman when his presence is 10 pounds lighter. Huskey will open the season in double-A ball and still be able to see Shea Stadium from the farm club in Binghamton, N.Y.

He might even take the baseball he crushed March 8 with him. "I got it right here," Huskey says, reaching into his locker. A member of the grounds crew retrieved it for him. "That's one swing I'll never forget. I'm going to take it home and frame it.

I may never do it again. That's why I have to keep that one." He cuts his own hair to save 10 bucks. He has a baby face with freckles, and an easy smile and a tourist's first impression of New York. "That's the biggest building I've ever seen," Huskey says, talking not about the Empire State Building but Trump Tower. "The tallest building in Lawton is 10 stories, and that's the college dorm.

I'd probably be afraid to go up in that' thing." He isn't fond of airplane travel but promises he'll conquer that fear. "I can get used to it," Butch Huskey says, smiling. "Oh, yeah, I can get used to it." from Anardarko. "They're rooting me on," Huskey says, "telling me to go all the way." He is a year or so from all the way. Butch Huskey would like to take his old friends along for the ride if he could.

He would like to be an inspiration. "I hope so, 'cause the young kids around there right now it's not looking good," Huskey said. "Maybe some day, maybe it could help five kids or so. That's five lives not wasted." He is 6-3, weighs 252 pounds and wishes his friends had someone like Virginia Barton to guide them. He is sad when he thinks about who and what he left behind.

"They were athletes, also," Huskey said. "It's just somewhere down the line, they didn't get turned in the right direction like I did." He has a maturity that belies his age.
