FRIDAY'S GAMES HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S. C. (AP) Arnold Palmer bogeyed the final hole to let long shot Hale Irwin have sole control of the first round lead in the $110,000 Heritage Golf Classic Thursday. The 26-year-old Irwin, seeking his first victory after four years on the pro tour, fashioned a three-under-par 68 on the extremely difficult 6,655 yard Harbour Town Golf Links, one of the most demanding courses in the country. Palmer, enjoying one of his better seasons at the age of 42, was just one stroke back and tied for second with Dave Eichelberger, a 28-ycar-old former Oklahoma Stater who scored his first pro victory earlier this year and has won more than $100,000.

Bob Smith and Rod Curl were next at 70 with Jack Nicklaus one of a group matching par 71. Lee Trevino, the season's leading money winner and already named the PGA player of the year, took a disas-terous eight on the par three 14th hole en route to a fat 78. 'T didn't play all that bad, said. "I just hit four bad shots." "Generally speaking, I'm pretty well satisfied," said Palmer, winner of four titles this year and sharing the prc-tourney favorite's role with Nicklaus and Trevino. "But I'm mad as hell that I bogeyed that last hole." He had it three under par going to the 458 yard final hole, but hit a one iron second shot into a hazzard, blasted it out and two-putted from 25 feet for a bogey 5.
