Wednesday, July 23, 2008 LOCAL Il lilJC Ol'LMO 5A Landfill expansion moves forward 1 read IT Every Thursday By MARCUS RAUHUT Staff writer Plans for expansion at Mountain View Reclamation Landfill near Greencastle took a step forward in the approval process. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection completed the environmental assessment of the expansion request, which concluded the proposed plans would adequately protect the environment. DEP still needs to review the technical aspects of the application before deciding whether to approve the expansion. Waste Management, which owns the facility, is seeking a permit to increase its average daily intake by 20 percent from 1,500 tons to 1,800 tons and its maximum daily intake from 1,850 tons to 2,000 tons. The company said in 2005 an expansion was necessary to deal with the rapid growth of the area.

According to DEP figures, annual intake at Mountain View Reclamation has nearly doubled since Waste Man agement took over the landfill in 1989. The landfill straddles the border of Montgomery and Antrim townships. The majority of the expansion would occur in Montgomery Town- ship near Letzburg Road and Pa. 16. The permit request includes a total expansion area of 83.1 acres, but only 66.5 acres would be used for actual waste disposal, according to John Wardzinski of Waste Management.

The request also proposes a vertical expansion, increasing the height of the landfill in some places by 60 according to DEP. The expansion is projected to extend the life of the landfill by 20 years. Waste Management officials said in the past that the expansion would result in additional traffic at the intersection of 11 and Pa. 16. The company has pledged $200,000 toward improvements at the intersection.
