WEDNESDAY, JULY 12, 1972 LIVINGSTON COUNTY PRESS PAGE 3-B Mt. Pleasant Man Tops In Bowling bytobCoopar The month of July is or HOWELL John Zyonsc of Mt. Pleasant won the annual singles bowling tournament held recently at the Howell Bowledrome. Zyonse received $2000 ana a trophy for his performance. f.i- mrwnrinx Donna McLachlan of Howell finished in a four way tie for ninth place at 705.

Prizes were paid down to scores of 625. There were 518 people in the money. The first twelve places in the singles tournament dinarily dominated in the sports world by the serene, slow paced sport of baseball. Not so in 1972. Perhaps it is the echoes of the tumultous convention in Miami Beach that is causing it 'I' everal other sports besides baseball to make headline news this month.

Whatever it second place was Randy King with a 754 scries. Zyonse showed his consistency by having only one open frame in the four games. He had a total of 24 strikes, of those in the 249 game. Zyonse bowls in the Petroleum "League at the Chippewa Recreation and has a 159 average for the season. He lives in Lea ton and is employed by the Michigan State Highway Department.

The highest position in the tournament of local entries was claimed by James Kanitz of Hartland with a 712 series. It was good for seventh place. INDOOR SHOWROOM There were more than 2,000 entries for the tournament with the prize money totalling $13,776.80. It was held over a span of seven weekends. Zyonse captured the championship by bowling games of 215, 215, 249, and 216.

In golf, Jack Nicklaus is attempting a feat never before done. Should he win the British Open this weekend, the slim and trim Nicklaus will be three-fourths of the way to the most prestigious of golf accomplishments the Grand Slam. Having already triumphed in the Masters and the U.S. than the Howell Melon Festival. Go get 'em Jack.

Let's have the sporting world focus in on the water wonderland. We doubt they'll be looking this way come World Series In chess, Bobby Fischer of the U.S.A. and Boris Spassky of Russia are finally beginning their world championship match. This most intellectual of games demands both physical and mental conditioning. The two geniuses will be playing the best of a 24 game series.

On Sunday afternoon, ABC plans to televise the highlights of the first three games. We will be watching. It should be quite a change from the Miami Beach circus scene which has dominated TV this week. Speaking of television, we hope you saw the Wimbledon finals via satellite last weekend. What a match it was between America's Stan Smith and Romania's Ilie Nastase for the men's singles title.

Never have we seen such fantastic tennis. Both men time and again made unbelievable shots. REESE EAZY-LIFT F00TE HITCHES LP. GAS LARGE PARTS DEPARTMENT 8 to 8 8 to 6 SUNDAY 12 to 5 pen, the millionaire golfer is drawing waves of attention to the old game which it has mm never before enjoyed. Should Nicklaus win this weekend, the stage will be set for the single greatest sporting event of the year-the PGA at Oakland Hills in Birmingham, Michigan the first week in August.

Just think of it bigger than the World Series; bigger than the Super Bowl; bigger even We realize Howell isn't a tennis town but once some new courts are built perhaps the sport will gain in popularity as it is elsewhere across the nation Tennis is an excellent jnd, besides that, it's fun. '7 The Karl Sweetan episode cracks us up. How stupid and desperate can a guy be? We wonder-how Pete Roselle will view the situation. If he treats Sweetan as he did Alex Karras and Paul Hor-nung in the early '60's, he would be eligible to play in 1974. Of course, a 15 year jail sentence could delay his return.

Would you believe another George Blanda? The World Hockey Association is evidently going to succeed. We salute Bobby Hull for switching leagues. Not only is he making a bundle of money, but Gordie Howe's goal record now remains safe. Way to go, Bobby. The U.S.

track and field team for the upcoming Olympics in Munich looks awfully powerful. No other country will be able to touch us. We enjoyed the elation shown by two of the boys after setting records in the" triple jump out in Eugene, Oregon. They darted and leaped all over the place hugging everyone in site. That's the way it should be.

When you're happy, let it all hang out. Hopefully, the Republican National Convention will be the same week as the Olympics in late August. Wouldn't it be something if the wealthy, over confident egotists went about their, conservative business while the rest of the nation had their eyes on Munich? Not only are golf, chess, donkeys, tennis, hockey, elephants, and track making the news but the Lions opened camp yesterday.
