Tuesday, October 1 , 2002 Pinijc Opinion 7A Bush recalls Rep. Patsy Mink's 'long record of public service' By DERRICK DePLEDGE Gannett News Service WASHINGTON - President Bush reacted Monday with sadnesH over the death of U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink as her friends and colleagues 'in Congress offered condolences and prepared to attend a memorial in Hawaii later this week. "Laura and I are saddened by the news of the passing of Congress-woman Patsy Mink. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends," Bush said. "Patsy Mink fought tirelessly for the causes she supported, and our nation is grateful to her for her long record of public service." U.a Rep. Neil Abercrombie, ID-Hawaii, planned to formally announce Mink's death in a resolution before the House of Representatives today. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, It 111 , will authorize a military plane to take an official congressional delegation to a memorial serv- Mink ice for Mink on Friday in Honolulu. Mink, 74, died on Saturday after battling viral pneumonia. Lawmakers and congressional aides stopped by Mink's suite at the Rayburn House Office Building on Monday to offer their sympathies. Others released statements that praised Mink, a liberal Democrat, for her dedication. Mink died a week after winning the Democratic primary for the 2nd District and two days after the deadline for placing names on the November ballot. Her name will remain on the ballot against Repub lican state Rep. Bob McDermott and two other candidates. Hawaii Democrats are urging voters to support Mink on Election Day, both as a tribute and to force a special election so Democrats can choose a replacement candidate. McDermott has complained that Democrats are asking voters to throw their vote away. The mid-term elections will decide which party controls the House, where Republicans now hold a narrow majority. Mink's district, which covers Oahu and the Neighbor Islands, is considered Democratic territory but her death gives Repute licans an unexpected opportunity. Lea Anne McBride, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said it is too early to speculate whether the party will target the district. "It's just not a time for talking politics," she said. Three House lawmakers, all Democrats, were re-elected by voters after they died. Clem Miller of California was re-elected in 1962. Nick Begich of Alaska and Majority Leader Hale Boggs of Louisiana were re-elected in 1972. All three died in plane crashes Begich and Boggs in the same crash. In 2000, Republican Sen. John Ashcroft of Missouri lost to Democratic Gov. Mel Camahan, who had been killed in a plane crash weeks before. Camahan's wife, Jean, was appointed to replace her husband. Ashcroft was later appointed US attorney general by President Bush. mm TTTzrrrm 1.11 WH.H.WOIWM.1MW1.I11.IMB1 BK1 (Minor Hi i saffi SAVE MORE ON MISSES SAVE MORE ON MISSES SAIIN ACCESSORIES SAVE MORE ON KIDS CS9ISi1CwvHmH2k I iTiiTfiMrBTaiTfilBTra 1C Sv5 iTrV In HnHfiQlHp lij. , 1tbtI j jjj j Excludes One Day SpecialsEarly BmJsBonus Buys; WOW!
