Old timers will hardly know the place. The 71-year-old span once called the Eighth Wonder of the World, now has a parkway appearance. Its trolley tracks have been ripped up and it has been widened to permit three traffic lanes in each direction.

No Buses Permitted. No commercial vehicles, except fire apparatus, ambulances, mail carriers and newspaper delivery trucks, will be permitted on the bridge. No bus lines will cross it. The old wooden blocks are pcne and so are the cobblestones which marked the approaches. New decking of concrete-filled steel grid has been installed and there's a modern lighting system.

While work on the project was going on, traffic was limited to one direction only. Although the renovations were to have been completed in two years, steel shortages caused delays. New Brooklyn Approaches. In February, 1950, when the work was begun, 37,244 vehicles were using the bridge each day. It is expected that 50,000 cars a day will use the improved link.

New approaches on the Brooklyn side were approved by Borough President John Cashmore to fit in with improvements in the Brooklyn civic center area. The new approaches on the Manhattan side have necessitated demolition of the old World Building and many of its neighbors. The popular pedestrian walk over Brooklyn Bridge also will be reopened tomorrow. The 50-year-old association was founded to help handicapped children and young people and now is the largest organization in the nation sponsoring research into the causes of congenital malformation, prematurity and birth injuries.
