to stay with the bases loaded in the inning, and it didn't work. "I'm going with my best," Pittsburgh manager Jim Leyland said. "And if I bring in a lefthander, the Cubs counter with Andre Dawson." The Pirates took the lead in the top of the first on Andy Van Slyke's homer, only the fifth home run off Maddux in his last 34 starts. Sosa's leadoff homer on the first pitch marked his first hit since breaking the third finger on his right hand June 13. Lavalliere's RBI single in the fourth put Pittsburgh up 2-1.

Maddux gave up six hits, walked six and struck out 10 in eight innings. CHICAGO (AP) Chicago Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux knew the pressure was on. The Cubs trailed the Pittsburgh Pirates by 6Vfe games in the NL East going into the three-game set that started Monday night.

And with the game tied at 2 in the eighth, the Pirates loaded the bases with one away. But Maddux pitched out of the inning without damage. And Sammy Sosa, returning from the 15-day disabled list, figured in all three Cubs runs as fifth-place Chicago won 3-2 to pull within 5lk games. The loss cut the Pirates' lead to one game over Montreal. The Expos beat St.

Louis 6-4 on Monday night. "There's no doubt about it. It's a much bigger series for us than it is for them," Maddux said. "They have breathing room. We don't." Sosa, with a solo homer and an RBI single, scored the game winner in the eighth when Kal Daniels delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

Maddux (13-8) won for the eighth time in 10 starts. Pirates starter Doug Drabek (8-8) saw his three-game road winning streak halted. "Sure, I made some good pitches. I got Mike Lavalliere on strikes and got Jose Lind to fly out. But that's when the game is the most fun," Maddux said.

"There was a real playoff atmosphere in the air. You could feel it out there." There's a long hill to climb before the playoffs for the Cubs, who are 47-51. "We have to get back to the .500 mark and just play a lot better. Everybody in this clubhouse has to think we have a chance to win this thing," Maddux said. Being allowed to stay in the game with the bases loaded in the eighth boosted Maddux's confidence.

Drabek also was allowed Local results Pony baseball PHILADELPHIA (AP) Curt Schilling said he was so tired in the last three innings of his shutout over the New York Mets, he felt like he was pitching under water. Schilling pitched his second straight shutout Monday night as the Philadelphia Phillies sent the Mets to their third consecutive blanking, 5-0. The futility of the Mets' offense almost overshadowed Schilling's brilliant effort on a hot, humid night. It was a major league leading 14th time that New York has been shut out this season. It matches the Mets most shutouts since 1980, when they also were blanked 14 times.

Also, it marked the first time they've been blanked three straight games since June 1975. But not to overlook Schilling. Schilling (9-6) stretched his scoreless streak to 24 innings and the Mets' streak to 29, 10 short of the club record. He pitched a six-hitter, struck out five and walked none in his fourth shutout this season. It was the third consecutive complete game for Schilling and his fifth this year.

It also was his second straight game without a walk. "I don't have any answers. We didn't get anything done again. Fourteen shutouts. Wow! We seem to be getting good swings.

I can't explain it. I can't ever remember a team having this much trouble scoring runs," Mets man ager Jeff Torborg lamented. Schilling couldn't understand the Mets string of zeroes either. "It's a mystery," he said. Schilling described his success as "a combination of a solid defense and good hitting" and confident pitching.

"I tried to bear down after we got those four in the first inning and not let them creep back in it," Schilling said. "I was tired at the end. Right now I'm tired. I felt like I was pitching under water the last three innings. "I pitched at the end on adrenaline.

The fans get behind you. You want to finish every game. I didn't want to give them reason to take me out." Catcher Darren Daulton, whose first inning, bases-loaded triple keyed a four-run start, said Schilling "was overpowering on a real muggy night. He had the same stuff in the ninth that he had in the first. We didn't have to mix much.

He had a good fastball and hard slider. He's got good endurance." "He's a big, strong horse," said Phillies manager Jim Fregosi. Torborg said, "Schilling pitched well right up to the end. He was strong all night. I've always liked his arm." Indeed, the trade in April that sent Jason Grimsley to Houston for Schilling might be the steal of the year.
