short story writer and novelist, Part II. 9 MACNEIL-LEHRER REPORT GD ROOKIES 7:01 G) CROSS WITS Shows By VICTORIA LEE BIGGERS All watch "America Alive!" How long has it been since a truly new kind of series was presented on daytime television? Not weekend daytime. I mean Monday through Friday, a rather desolate area where the thirsty viewer whose cup of tea is something other than soap operas, game shows, or reruns almost certainly will die of thirst. It used to be different. Once upon a time entertainers like Garry Moore, Arthur Godfrey and Peter Lind Hayes had network variety series in the daytime good ones with delightful regulars and guests.

Comics like Carol Burnett and Dick Van Dyke got their start and, to some extent, their training in network daytime variety. Where is such a training ground today? And there were other kinds of shows. Art Linkletter's "People Are Funny" and his "House-party" were special daytime pleasures. In fact. Linkletter probably was the last of those yesteryear emcees to offer unique daytime entertainment.

Perhaps it is only fitting, therefore, that minded archeologist, who is in reality an undercover leader, hides people from the Nazi Gestapo. (2 35 mins.) 1:00 CD 63 TOMORROW Host: Tom Snyder. Tune in and see what you think. How else can uniqueness be acrobatic jewel thief and a killer. (R; 60 mins.) CD EVENING IN BYZANTIUM Glenn Ford, Shirley Jones. A once-great producer appears at Cannes Film Festival with a provocative script, but it soon becomes apparent that the script goes beyond just a movie. (Pt.

(90 mins.) 10:00 POLICE WOMAN The powerful and vindictive owner of a top high-fashion model agency is slain, and Pepper poses as a model to get an inside look at the industry and solve the crime. (R; 60 mins.) dren, parents of gay people) are on stage in the studio and answer questions posed by the studio audience and Donahue. The big plus offered by "America Alive" is that the producers do more than bring the guests into the like 1 America, Alive' should be encouraged NBC current effort to field something new in daytime is a program hosted by Art son. Jack Linkletter. The program is "America Alive." And I hope you will watch it, not because it is a perfect show not by a longshot but because it is different, because it has potential, and because networks and local stations ought to be encouraged when they try something new.

"America Alive" might better be titled "Link-up with Linkletter," for the innovation the program offers is a giant two-way intercom screen in the New York studio from which Jack anchors the program. By way of this series," viewers at home and members of the small, informal studio audience are in touch with roving NBC "reporters" Bruce Jenner, Janet Langhart and Pat Mitchell. They also are in touch with TV-movie critic David Sheehan, sex author ities Masters and Johnson, comics Dick Arkin and Bert Berdis, and Sheila Graham (probably the weakest segment) doing a "gossip check." If you need a simple handle to help you understand this series (I did not understand it until I watched it Ol' k. 'America, Alive' regulars are (left to right) Bruce Jenner, Jack Linkletter and Janet Langhart several times), then think of a syndicated talk show one example is the Phil Donahue program where people associated with or concerened about a particular subject (relavites of those injured by "Son of Sam," parents of gifted chil studio. "America Alive" goes right to their homes.

And members of the studio audience as well as Linkletter and his roving reporters talk to these people via that giant two-way screen all live! Sound unique? It is. Sure,.
