The ovation lasted about a minute Rumors about what Devaney might do keep cropping up although he said he'll be content to remain as athletic director unless a good pro offer with part ownership comes his way. Newest rumor is Devaney will replace J. D. Roberts of the New Orleans Saints.

Devaney's good friend, Cappy Cappaert, is supposed to be trying to buy the Saints. Another report says Devaney and retiring Michigan State coach Duffy Daughterly are trying to land an NFL franchise Devaney wasn't the only one retiring Thursday. I'd rather have won this game. "This is the biggest loss I've had. It hurts more. I'm not going to build myself up for the Heisman and gel another big hurt." "I feel I'm the best athlete and have the best statistics of anyone in thft'eountry. I feel if they give the Heisman Trophy to someone else they'll have to tell him he got it because of Johnny Rodgers' bad character.

I feel I'm the best player. feel in 21 years I've had one real bad mistake. I've certainly had many more chances than that to make mistakes. I think in 21 years I've done all right for Johnny Rodgers. If some people want to hold one mistake against mo, there is nothing I can do about it.

"If Pruitt wins it, we'll still be friends." Rich Glover, Nebraska nose guard: "To me this one was for everything Big Eight rankings bowl Devaney seniors everything. To make it so bad. they came here and heat us at home (the only home loss ever suffered by Nebraska's 17 seniors)." Dave Humm, Nebraska quarterback: "The last time we had the ball, we didn't have good field position. It seemed like they had 14 men and couple of coaches dropped back to defend." Devaney on the nullified touchdown pass: "I questioned the call. My interpretation of it is it's either got to be a touchdown or pass interference.

You can't bump a receiver off the playing field." Rodgers on the same play: "No. 2S (Pope) rolled me out of bounds. I didn't have much choice. I knew if I stepped out I couldn't come back in. I thought if was rolled out that I could.

He (an official) said it didn't make any difference." Rodgers on his game: "It is probably the worst game I've had in quite a while. I feel I could have done more than I did if I'd been given the chance, but it's like, that sometimes." Humm on this comment: "I don't think we went to John enough today." Devaney, ditto: "Maybe we should have gone to Rodgers a little more. Humm didn't have a whole lot of time to choose." WARDS TOWN COUNTRY Continued From Page 31 happy we could come back and beat 'em." Defensive back Keniili Pope, who admitted ho shoved Rodgers out of bounds on a touchdown pass that was "called back, recalling the second of his two late interceptions: "Me and Johnny both kind of caught the ball. I kind of wrenched it away from him. He's a little 175-pound winghack.

I'm about 205. do a little bench pressing, too. I felt like I could wrestle it awav from him and I did." Pope on his other interception: "Rod Shoate tipped the ball to me. It felt real good. I just couldn't believe it.

All year I hadn't intercepted a pass. I just couldn't believe it." Pope on his fumbling a fair catch to give Nebraska field position for its first touchdown drive: "The ball kind of hung up in the air. It looked like at the last minute the wind kinda caused it to blow over my shoulder. It was just one of those things. I didn't let it bother me too much.

It looked like after that fumble they tried to pick on me. They threw three straight passes at me. They probably felt I was down or something." Pope on whether he rapped with Rodgers during the game: "Every now and then I'd say something like 'Way to go' or 'Get your head in the ball game. Good or 'Good It was to make him say. 'I can beat this guy'.

I just had to play tough every down. I was real Ipsyched out for this game and I just did my thing." Shonte on whether he was proud of the defense: "Yes I am. And the offense today. I'm real proud of both of them today. Everybody played hard.

We were down. We had the confidence to fight back and get it. I knew we wanted it, but I didn't know if we wanted it bad enough." Shoate, on whether he was worried when it was 14-0: "I was a little worried. Well, I was a lot worried. I knew when the offense drove down and scored the first time, they could do it again.

knew we just had to get the ball back for 'em. We did, and they went down and scored again." Shoate on the draw play which fooled the Oklahoma defense and netted Nebraska's first touchdown: "We had a 'swap' call where I was out on the end. I was hollering swap and Derland Moore didn't hear me. Therefore, we didn't have enough guys there. I saw him but I tripped up on somebody's foot." Moore: "I'm really proud of the defense.

We really did a good job today. Everybody did. Everybody just fought their guts out." Tinker Owens on whether he felt, pressure when he had to go in and replace the injured John Carroll: "I felt a lot. But after I was in there a couple of plays, I just got it off my mind. I knew John was hurt so bad I had to play.

I just did my best. I had a lot better day than I thought I'd ever have. This season, I was sure I wouldn't have a game like this." Nebraska's Koiigers about his Heisman Trophy chances: "This definitely doesn't help me any. 1 suppose yesterday I warned the Heisman more than I do Tinkering OK With Sooners Continued From Pnge 31 faced a third and four at its 20. Robertson spotted Tinker angling to the far corner.

Tinker made a leaping grab which must still be running like a replay through the. minds of the 7G.5S7 in attendance. The catch moved the football to the seven where OU scored four plays later. SwiUer called the other third down catch Owens' most Important. It was third and sixth from the Nebraska 32.

In such situations, Swi titer explained, only the sidelines were open. That's where Owens went. So did Robertson's short pass. Tinker neatly stopped away from Yaralian and ran to the 10. From there Oklahoma scored in two plays.

One was a pass Owens did not catch. The misfire was pivotal. Owens was slanting through the end zone with a full escort of red shirted I tuskers. "This guy I don't know who he was shoved me down from behind," said Owens. "Gosh, I didn't think they were ever going to call it.

When I saw that flag go down I was glad." Not so glad was Yaralian. He didn't think he interfered on the pass. "We were running along together and we bumped into each other," he said. The penalty put the ball on the one, from where Grant Burget scored on the next play. Robertson preferred to talk about the passes Tinker did catch.

"He made a lot of great catches on mediocre throws," said the quarterback. Robertson made the under-rating himself. He connected on 10 of 22 passes for 186 yards. But ho pointed again to Tinker. "He runs great routes," said the quarterback.

"He's consistent. You know where he'll be." It was ironic a freshman should star against the Hunkers, whose coach. Bob Devaney. doesn't believe in freshman competition and has no yearlings on his varsity. Owens, like many players, sits around the night before games thinking what might happen.

"You know," he said, "kinda like flashbacks. last night, I kinda had it in my head that if I got in there I'd run out there and maybe get open but, gosh. I never dreamed of anything; like this."
