PAIL) Monday, Oct, 23, 1972 25 -State Defense Was Up to Occasion By liny SoUInn boy attack to about half of its normal output. Oklahoma State gained 222 yards Saturday, compared to a season average of 431.2. Blackmail needed 22 carries to net a mere 33 yards. Fullback George Palmer slugged out a tough 67 yards, also in 22 tries. But the defense, which has complemented the offense so well this season, took things into its own hands.

Said Palmer: "The defense was great. They saved it. They get better every week." Besides, the Cowboy offense was in a crippled condition. Quarterback Brent Blackmail was not yet back at full speed on the ankle sprained two weeks ago. Running backs Fountain Smith, Alton Gerard and Alfred Nelms all had injury problems which limited their work to six total carries and 30 yards.

Thus, the rain and the hurts, coupled with a tough Baylor defense headed by Roger Goree, the 1071 Southwest conference defensive nlaver of Staff Writer STILLWATER The throttling of Oklahoma State's offense by a combination of rain and Baylor resistance did not come as any great surprise to Cowboy coach Dave Smith. He's just happy the defense was up to the occasion to supply a 20-7 victory. "Everything we felt about Baylor going into this game proved to be right," Smith said. "They are real sound. They've been playing against the wishbone for years.

They were one of the first to do well against it." play of the game: "On a rainy clay like this, the offense can't handle the ball very well. So the defense has to make up for it." And make up for it, the defense did. The three Oklahoma touchdowns required only a 48-yard contribution by the offense. The first one, tying the score at 7-7 midw a through the third quarter, came on a 50-yard run by Stover with an intercepted pass. The offense got to watch that one entirely from the sideline.

"Our defense has gotten so many good opportuni- lies for the offense this season," said Smith, "but never has been able to score itself. It was so good that they could get one." The second Cowboy touchdown "drive" originated from the Baylor 21 after a juggled center snap by Bear punier Rusty Par-roll. Freshman end James White put the pressure on Parrott to keep him from recovering in time to get away a kick, and Gilbert Barnes made the tackle. The third O-State touchdown began from 27 yards out after Darryll Stewart's second pass interception of the game. "You talk about big plays!" exclaimed Smith.

"Stewart makes them ev-erytimc." The junior college transfer has been a Big Eight Conference performer for six games now and he's the league's leading pass interceptor with six. "I thought Barry Price made a big difference when he came in," said Smith. Also crippled, Price didn't step a foot onto the field until the third quarter was six minutes old. "The fact that he was getting after the center so well probably contributed to Baylor's bad snaps." On Price's first play, Baylor was ihird-and-onc on its 20 and the Bears wore clinging lo their 7-0 1 a d. The quarterback promptly bobbled the snap and Baylor had to punt on the next play.

Within seven minutes Oklahoma State had two touchdowns and was on its way to its fourth victory in six starts. The Bears never ceased dropping the football, winding up with 15 fumbles, seven of them lost to the Cowboys. White, the freshman, recovered three. Sophomore Carl De-Vorce, who started in i 's place at nose guard, 'enjoyed a busy day himself. He was credited with four stops and eight assists tops on the Cowboy tackle chart (pending the coaches' review ol game films).

"We were very, very concerned going into this one," Smith said. "We felt it was very important for us to win to maintain what we had going." Next up is Nebraska, but Smith wasn't ready lo say much about the Huskers. He did note: "Baylor's offense was very similar to Nebraska's. This game probably helped us some in that respect. There's quite a difference in personnel, of course." And, he said: "We're not concerned about anything except our next game that's quite a concern." Said Lee Stover, who the year, reduced the Cow- made THE key defensive Reds Grudgingly Concede As Best Phipps' Late Score Saves Browns, 23-17 with two men on.

"Ho shouldn't have thrown a ball like he threw," sighed Rose. Hal McRae, the pinch hitter who drove In Cincinnati's first run with a bases loaded smash lo deep center just before Rose's long fly ball, said: "I was just hoping it would go out." McRae had stomped Riverfront Stadium's artificial turf in frustration as center fielder Mangual hauled in his lowering fly ball near the wall. Tolan, his leg in pain from a muscle pull suffered as he raced for Sal Bando's deep drive in the A's sixth, blamed himself for the Cincinnati loss. "As far as I'm concerned," Tolan said. "There went our World Scries chances right there. "I felt it was my fault. I let the fans down and I have no excuse." Tolan said Mangual's first-inning line drive "just look off on me. "I tipped it with my glove.

I played the ball like it was sinking, then it just took off. "This is two years out of three we let the fans down," Tolan said, recalling the Reds' five-game Series debacle against Baltimore in 1970. "I apologize for that." "I guess Oakland has to be the best team this year," mumbled Manager Sparky Anderson, puffing a cigarette in his small office in Riverfront Stadium.

"They won the Series, and you can't take that away from them. "We got beat four times by one run. We just couldn't get a big hit, and they did." Bobby Tolan, the Cincinnati center fielder whose first inning three-base error on Angel Mangual's line drive led to Oakland's winning margin, contended the Reds are baseball's best. "You've got to recognize Oakland as the World Champions," ho said in a clubhouse populated by Cincinnati players slumped on locker benches, pondering their Scries mear-miss. "I'm not degrading the Athletics," Tolan continued, "because they're a great ball club.

But I still think we're a better ball club." Relief pitcher Clay Carroll, the goat of the Reds' 3-2 loss to the A's in the Scries fourth game, refused to concede Oakland's superiority. "I sure don't," he said. "We've got a whole lot of teams in the National League who have more power, but they the Athletics do have a great pitching staff." Slugger Johnny Bench was asked if he conceded the A's were. best. "They won," he replied.

Left fielder Pole Rose sat at his locker stall, partially hidden by a stand that would have been filed with players for television interviews had the Reds won. Along with field goals of 25 and 41 yards by Errol Mann in the first period, the touchdowns provided the fat lead for the Lions.
