The first OSU touchdown came on a 48-yard surge which featured a 17-yard pass from Burk to Taylor and an 11-yard run by Burk. Again, only four plays were needed as the Huskers went in from 27 yards out. The third Nebraska touchdown came on an 80-yard drive in 13 plays. At the OSU 23, the Huskers elected to pass on third-and-two. Dave Sharnblin made a diving catch on the Cowboy one. It is insisted by many that films will show the ball bounced into his hands.

Nebraska's fumbled punt came on the fifth play of the second half with the Huskers leading 21-7. Bobby Thomas signaled a fair catch, but dropped the ball and Coppola plopped on it. Burk ran for two and eight and Miller season and the 6-3, 208-pounder did it again. He personally scored two of the touchdowns on short sneaks and passed eight yards to John O'Leary and 10 yards to Brad Jenkins for the other.
