WASHINGTON (AP) -The price wholesalers and a for their goods especially meat and gasoline rose sharply last month, the government reported Friday. At the same time, the Labor Department said the nation's unemployment rate dipped from 5.9 per cent in May to 5.5 per cent in June, but many of the new jobs went to students turned workers for the summer. The Wholesale Price Index rose by five-tenths of one per cent last month. Combined with the May rise of three-fifths of one per cent, it was the biggest two-month jump since last January and February. Increases were registered in the cost of livestock, meat, gasoline, lumber, shoes, clothing, paper, drugs, rubber and plastics.

A reflection in retail prices in a few months is likely. Meanwhile, wholesale prices of big household appliances including televisions; natural gas; glass; milk and chemicals all declined. The rise in the work force was not as large as anticipated; that Is, fewer students than expected went looking for jobs, so much of the improvement in the jobless rate was due to seasonal factors, lor me uraw. no won ine draw giving him the important first move. Having dropped their demand that Fischer forfeit the first game because of his late arrival for the scheduled start last Sunday, the Russians asked Thursday morning that Spassky be allowed to rest until Tuesday.

Still we feel that the unanswered questions of the 1970's are more serious, more difficult, to answer, and more basic to the 21st Century than those which American Christians have faced in a long, long time. The problems are nol of a mechanical nature. We already have the machinery to resolve most if not BIBLE LESSON all of our modern crises. What we lack is the wisdom to make our machin-ery, our organizations, run.

In the schools of this country we have the means of the best education available anywhere on earth, but we don't seem to know how to use them so that the quality of American education can reach its highest expression. In our churches we have the instruments to do great things with the spirits of men, but we lack the insight to discern the things that are really important and the resolve to concentrate our efforts on those things. We can deal with poverty, if we would, but still one out of every five Americans lives in poverty- Tlutre are many ways to combat racial prejudice but we have not used them effectively enough to rid our country of this blight. We could deal effectively with the ills of our society if we had the will to do so. The American dream continues, but for many men it is a frustration because they feel they had no part in it.

To enumerate our problems is to repeat the headlines 1 of today's per: explosive populations; decaying city centers; authority eroding, deteriorating morals; pol-luted environment. We could do far more about all of these matters than we are doing. We need two conditions that are not widely present today. One is to join forces with each other and not run off in separate directions. The other is God's guidance.

How do we get these? This question is examined in the experience of Elijah as found in I Kings 19; 9-18. Since we accept the word of God as our rule of faith and practice we have to believe the possibility that the Scriptures have something to say to our modern problems, point by point. After all, the Scriptures are only the record of the way God dealt with man's problems in the past. As we study that record, we can learn how God is dealing with our problems today. If we turn to the Bible simply to confirm the opinions we already have, we will not find much help.

What we really need is to want God's guidance and help in understanding it. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. Washington, who told the court that he has resigned from the bar association, reported only S6.SC0 of his 1965 income, which totalled $23,832. The maximum sentence he could receive, Burkett told the court, is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Judge Langley, of Muskogee, postponed sentencing in the case until the pre-sentence report was completed after Washington said he would rather wait for the report but was willing to be sentenced immediately.
