While attending North Texas JState University, Denton, Wiehe was trombone soloist with the North Texas State Band and filled guest appearances with concert and dance bands. He was called to active duty in the Navy and was serving as an aviation machinist's mate in a bomber squadron in the Pacific when he was ordered to report to the: U.S. Navy. School of Music in Washington, D.C., as an instructor of trombone. His ability was rewarded with his transfer to the U.S.
