tape delay. By Barry Wilnor AP Sports Writer So you went to sec major league baseball and a hockey name broke out? Don't worry, it's not that unusual this season. Pitcher throws the ball at the batter. Batter charges the mound, or in one case, heads for the opposing manager. Players fight or threaten to throw punches.

Players get fined or suspended. Feuds build. And it's only June. "We find every year, there is one period or one month where it seems to get out of hand, then it just calms down," says American League director of public relations Phyllis Merhige. This season, there have been enough bench-clearing incidents to make the national pastime seem like a contact sport.

Just last weekend, it happened twice in a double dose of Saturday Night Fever. First, Seattle catcher Dave Valle was hit by Kevin Brown's pitch. Home plate umpire Mark Johnson warned Brown that another incident would mean an ejection. Valle, surrounded by teammates, broke away and rushed after Texas manager Bobby Valentine as both dugouts emptied. Valle was ejected.

Two nights earlier. Rangers reliever Mike Jeffcoat had hit Valle, who missed the next game. At Atlanta, Phillies pitcher Wally Ritchie hit Atlanta's Otis Nixon one pitch after Ritchie almost hit Nixon in the knee. On the first pitch, Nixon was restrained' from charging the mound. There no stopping him when he was hit.

"All I know Is. Otis. Nixon beat the living crap out of him, and that made me happy," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "And he should have. It was uncalled for." Now comes this warning to opponents who taunt him about his past from Steve Howe, the Yankees' pitcher suspended six times for drug and alcohol abuse.

Howe told the New York Post that he would retaliate against those who taunt him with his fists and possibly his fastball. "Let me say this, nothing happens until 1 throw the ball, and I throw the ball 95 miles per hour with accuracy," The Post quoted Howe. In Monday's game, Howe motioned to taunters in tho Toronto dugout to come out and fight. "I believe in baseball, mutual respect and etiquette," said Howe, who said he didn't hear remarks from the Blue Jays about his drug problems. "Whoever said that if they said it is a gutless If I heard them say that it wouldn't have stopped there.

That mean's we're going to duke." Which would be par for the course this season. John Wathan, former manager of the Kansas City Royals, on being offered a consultant's position by general manager Herk Robinson immediately after he was fired: told him. 'If you had made me a consultant five minutes ano, my first recommendation would have been that you not fire the "One of their players told me before the game that Bobby Valentine called the pitch that hit Dave two days ago," Mariners manager Jim Lefebvre said. But Lefeb-vre said he didn't think Brown hit Valle on purpose. Later that night in Chicago, A's catcher Terry Stein-bach was beaned by Bobby Thigpen, Both benches emptied and, as Steinbach was taken off on a stretcher, Rickey Henderson charged after several White Sox players.

"I know what the intent was. I know exactly what happened out there. That's all I want to say," A's manager Tony La Russa said. Peace returned to the diamond on Monday, when there were just four games. By Tuesday, the combatants had returned.

No specific allegations were contained in the letter from the NCAA informing the school of the probe.

But Clemson officials said they believed it concerns the 1988 recruitment and academic certification of Wayne Buckingham. Buckingham, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, has been dogged by questions about the authenticity of bis high school transcript since arriving at Clemson. The NCAA letter to Clemson comes less than a week after the NCAA told the school it was lifting its one-year probation on the football program for two major and six secondary violations under former coach Danny Ford. NCAA and Clemson officials said if violations are found in the Buckingham case, the school will not be faced with the possibility of the so-called death penalty. Pro Basketball Del Harris said he will return for a fifth season as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, ending weeks of speculation that he would move to the NBA team's front office.

Baseball Frank Sinatra and Don Rickles were among hundreds of mourners at the funeral for Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda's son, who died of pneumonia this week at age 33. More than 100 floral tributes were spread around the casket of Thomas "Spunky" Lasorda who died Monday at his Santa Monica home. Death was attributed to pneumonia and severe dehydration.
