The soreness persisted Sunday when he came to Candlestick Park and it was decided that surgery would be performed by team physician Gordon Campbell.

How long Mitchell will be on the disabled list will be determined by the extent of the injury. No matter that the opposition was the worst "He threw his fastball in and out and then came with his screwball or curve, and those were some nasty pitches," said third baseman Frankie Abreu.

"He knows how to pitch," said left-fielder Mike Fiore, who led off the seventh with a double, one of only two balls hit hard off Valenzuela.
