Clemens (7-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in eight innings, struck Ihree and walked one. After winning his first six decisions, Clemens has lost to Texas, Detroit and Baltimore while beating only the New York Yankees. His previous-low strikeout total was four in the loss to the Rangers on May 18. The loss dropped Clemens' career record after Boston defeats to 71-20. The Red Sox have lost eight of their last 11 overall, including three of four in the weekend series against Baltimore. Angels 7, Blue Jays 2 TORONTO Dave Winfield hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, giving him nine RBIs in two games, as California beat Toronto and sent the Blue Jays to Baltimore Beats Bosox 5-3 Major Leagues their sixth loss in eight games. Jim Abbott (5-1) won his fifth consecutive decision since April 28. He allowed nine hits in 8!4 innings, struck out four and walked three as California won for the fourth time in six games. Thompson replaced Jose in that game and his broken-bat single in the 10th was the game-winner. Cub 4, Expos 3 MONTREAL - Cedric Landrum's two-out single in the ninth rallied Chicago to victory over Montreal, extending the sputtering Expos' losing streak to five games. Montreal has lost 10 of 11 and has yet to beat the Cubs in six games this season. The soreness persisted Sunday when he came to Candlestick Park and it was decided that surgery would be performed by team physician Gordon Campbell. How long Mitchell will be on the disabled list will be determined by the extent of the injury. Valenzuela Attracts 1 2,246 With Outing in Little Rock LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) This was a different kind of crowd. Trailing 4-0, the Arkansas Travelers started the last inning with a double and a walk. The scoreboard operator asked for noise. He got some, not what you'd expect from a record turnout. Three fly balls later, it was over and the crowd gave the winning pitcher from Midland a standing ovation. He had produced right on cue a nifty two-hitter. No matter that the opposition was the worst hitting team in double-A baseball. Most of the 12,246 wanted to see former Cy Young winner Fernando Valenzuela on his way back to the major leagues. And he may be back this week. Valenzuela left Little Rock for California on Sunday, but was uncertain when the California Angels planned to call him up. When they do, he's expected to replace rookie Scott Lewis in the Angels' rotation." On Saturday, even the victims appreciated Valenzuela. "He threw his fastball in and out and then came with his screwball or curve, and those were some nasty pitches," said third baseman Frankie Abreu. "He knows how to pitch," said left-fielder Mike Fiore, who led off the seventh with a double, one of only two balls hit hard off Valenzuela. "He did the things he had to do to get back to the big leagues." Valenzuela threw 78 pitches 47 for strikes. In 17 innings against minor league opposition, he has not allowed an earned run. Released by the Los Angeles Dodgers near the end of spring training and signed to a free-agent contract by the California Angels, Valenzuela struck out five Saturday night and issued two walks - both to John Scllick. Valenzuela said he used his fastball early and then went to his curve and screwball. Sellick managed to lay off the screwball. "It is a nasty pitch, and he keeps it just outside the plate," Sellick said.
