KTVY Celebrates 40th Birthday KTVY has just been given the Edward R. Murrow award for the best Television Investigative Reporting in the country for the nursing home series "Beloved or Betrayed." When the station-went on the air in 1949 the call letters were WKY-TV. There were about 3,300 TV sets in Oklahoma at the time, and initial programming was from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday. The first studios were in the Little Theater in the Municipal Auditorium.

Highlights of the first day of programming included live broadcasts from then-owner E.K. Gaylord, Gov. Roy Turner and General Manager P.A. Sugg on "What Is Television." WKY-TV was one of the first stations in the country to have its own mobile TV unit which allowed the station to "roam the far corners of the state" and relay its signal to Continued on Page 68 tion was the first in the nation to originate live color programming from its own studio. In 1954, it was the first station to feed a live colorcast to any network when segments of the Anadarko Indian Exposition were fed to NBC's Today and Home shows.

In 1958, WKY-TV was the first station to install radar for weather reports and KTVY was the first to telecast programs in stereo. WKY-TV won the prestigious Emmy Award in 1974 for "Through the Looking Glass Darkly" and in 1 98 9 KTVY was awarded the national-, ly recognized Weintal Prize for Diplomatic Reporting for its documentary "From Red Soil to Red Square." JUNE 6, 1949 appeared to be a typical summer day in Oklahoma. Teenagers piled into Dad's Stude-baker and headed to the local hangout, Beverly's on Lincoln Boulevard, for "chicken in the rough." Families gathered around the radio to hear Father Knows Best and "Bib-bidi-Bobbodi-Boo" was the tune of the times. But that day has a special significance for Oklahoma. On that day, WKY-TV (4) (since 1976, KTVY (4)) transmitted the first television signal across Oklahoma, catapulting the state into a bold new age of technology.

"KTVY (4) is proud to be celebrating 40 years of service to the people of Oklahoma," said Bob Finke, presi-dent and general manager, "and we plan to continue to serve as Oklahoma's broadcasting leader for another 40 years." WKY-TV (4) pioneered this portion of the state's communication industry.
