The Oklahoma State-Nebraska football game was as competitive as Cowboy fans had hoped Saturday but only after OSU had lost all hope of winning. The lOth-ranked and previously unbeaten Cowboys watched in horror as 7th-ranked Nebraska romped to a 42-0 lead just 3:18 into the second quarter.

It was Rockne, Leahy and Parseghian. It was another chapter in the history of college football's most storied school. Above all, it was a classic as fourth-ranked Notre Dame got its long-awaited revenge Saturday, defeating No. 1 Miami 31-30. Free safety Pat Terrell, who returned an interception 60 yards for a second-period touchdown, broke up a two-point conversion pass with 45 seconds left.

1 "This was a win by the Notre Dame spirit," coach Lou Holtz said after the biggest Irish win in years. "It was a win by the spirit of a group of guys who just refused to fold, and believed. You can't pick out a hero. Notre Dame was the hero today." The Irish broke a 21-21 tie when wingback Pat Eilers ran 2 yards for a tie-breaking, third-quarter touchdown, the first of his career, two plays after the Irish turned back a fake punt. Reggie Ho's 27-yard field goal late in the third period made it 31-21, and Notre Dame survived three Miami scoring threats in the final 7:04.

The Irish also overcame a record 424-yard, four-touchdown passing show by Steve Walsh, but they negated that by intercepting him three times. The Irish took advantage of seven Miami turn-See IRISH, Page 7 Missouri at Oklahoma State Kansas at Iowa State Nebraska at Kansas Stale Houston Rips Tulsa 82-28 Page 5 More on OU, OSU Page 8-10 During that time, the Cornhusker offense scored on five straight possessions, and 70-24. A crowd of 73,800 saw the Sooners, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Eight Conference, break their own national record with 25 seconds remaining. Walk-on halfback Joe Muti's 34-yard touchdown run erased the 1980 record of 758 yards set against Colorado. The Sooners entered the contest averaging 280.4 yards rushing per game.

This horse is now a fat cat. The Oklahoma-bred posted a 1 -length decision in the race and collected $60,000 for owners Fred Selz and Ben Lincoln of Little Rock, Ark.

Trained by Donnie Von Hemel of Piedmont, Sportin Okie entered the race with earnings of $41,230 and upped his total to more than $100,000. The Sportin Life gelding began as a $21,000 investment for his owners, who claimed him April 23 at Oak- lawn Park. "We're happy with the investment," Selz said. "It makes up for some $50,000 claims that didn't do so well." Sportin Okie, dismissed at 15-to-l despite his eight-length win in the Sept. 18 Lawton Handicap, carried jockey Don Pettinger to win and covered the 1 miles in track-record time of 1:48 1-5.

After having a tight hold on Sportin Okie through six furlongs, Pettinger put on one energetic ride in the final quarter.
