A new computer tutor keeps beginning pianists in line by selecting appropriate lessons, then monitoring the students' efforts on an electronic keyboard.

Piano Tutor, as it's called, is just one example of how music-minded researchers are tapping technology and pushing beyond the boundaries of the Moog synthesizer of the 1960s and 1970s. "What we're doing is learning how to control the technology that is part of our culture, and that's not just for the sake of using technology," says Craig Harris, president of the Computer Music Association. "We need to re-evaluate how we learn, how we think about sound, how we think about music and art." wa-aar-jaj Prague rest its lull value. "Your rhythm was very uneven. Try keeping a steady beat." During downright awful renditions, the computer interrupts and instructs students to begin again and again and again, if necessary. "We're trying to model this after real teachers, and a real teacher would interrupt right at the beginning," says Roger Dannenberg, a research computer scientist at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University. His collaborators, Annabelle Joseph and Mar-ta Sanchez, music professors at Carnegie Mellon, have interrupted countless piano students over the years for mistakes mysteriously materializing in practice.

The three entered exercises and tunes such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy" into the computer by describing how the music appears on the written page and by performing the selections on an attached electronic keyboard. "Always as piano teachers, you're concerned about what happens with a student between lessons," Joseph says. "No matter how carefully you explain things, strange things happen in the week between, so you spend a lot of time correcting." Another Carnegie Mellon researcher, Paul McAvinney, has invented VideoHarp, a computerized instrument capable of sensing gestures to reproduce the sound of any instrument, including an entire orchestra. Images of a performer's fingers are reflected by mirrors into an optical sensor McAvinney designed. From this pattern of light and shadow, the position and velocity of each fingertip are deduced.

The information subsequently is translated by computer and transmitted to synthesizers that produce the sound. The kind of sound emanating from amplifiers string, woodwind, percussion, brass is determined by programs stored in the computer. "It is neat that an absolute musical idiot like myself can make a good sound by just having enough flexibility," says McAvinney, a senior research programmer at Carnegie Mellon and chairman of Sensor Frame Corp. While speaking, McAvinney haphazardly brushes his hands across both sides of the 13-pound, trapezoid-shaped instrument, just as a harpist might. A stream of deep, lush notes never before heard and likely never to be heard again fills the small music laboratory.

"A lot of people ask me if I'm a musician. I tell them no, but I don't believe Stradivari was either," he says. Each finger is capable of reproducing a particular instrument's sound, successively or simultaneously. Four fingers consequently can sound like a string quartet, with practice, of course. "You certainly can't play each of those instruments the way that a person in the orchestra plays each instrument," McAvinney says.

"No human is capable of that. But if anybody ever wants to try, there it is." Until five or so years ago, so-called computer music was impractical for live performances since it took longer to compute the sound than the sound actually lasted, says Stephen Pope, editor of the Computer Music Journal. That changed in the early 1980s with the advent of digital synthesizers, which enabled instruments to sound like something else anything else, in fact while played the usual way. VideoHarp goes a step further by incorporating totally new ways of playing. Brushing one's toes against the instrument, for example, can generate sounds the same as using one's fingers.

Piano Tutor is still evolving, according to Dannenberg, and should be commercially available in three years. While admittedly unconventional, "there is nothing radically new or weird" about computer music, according to Pope. "It's just composers using the state-of-the-art technology of our time, which happens to be software and computers," he said. "It's no less musical if a composer is involved in technolo- Ruih'Marlln, RANCHES LAND. But the Distels say as long as they're will-ing to work long hours, they can make a pretty good living. And it's not every family that has the chance to cut across the heart of Europe week after week, visiting historic cities like Basel, Mainz and Heidelberg, and crossing into France, Belgium and the Netherlands as well. Fewer and fewer families are able to afford running a barge business because of skyrocketing costs and stiff competition from powerful shipping companies and the railroad. Some 2,000 family-owned, live-in barges were registered in West Germany in 1980, but the figure has dropped to about 1,300.

Distel is a member of one of the most venerable West German families still operating barges, tracing his forebearers' river-working roots back to the 16th century. Distel was born on a barge, and spent most of his life on river boats owned by his grandfather and By Terrence Petty Associated Press Writer ON THE RHINE, West Germany (AP) Heinz-Peter Distel, leathery hands gripping an iron ship-wheel, guides his live-in barge downriver in a family tradition nearly as old as the medieval castles looming on both sides of the mighty Rhine River. "I was born on the water, and I don't really have any desire to leave it. This is in my blood," says Distel, part of a breed of fiercely independent West Germans who work and live on family-owned transport barges. Distel and his wife, Helga, are the sole owners, operators and residents of the Stadt Monheim, a workhorse barge that's nearly the length of a football field and has most of the comforts of a conventional home.

The 52-year-old Distel is a man of few words. Ensconsed high up in the pilot house next to his multi-band radio, he keeps his vision firmly fixed on the fast-running river and steers a steady-course through central West Germany. Twin diesel engines throb powerfully below, propelling the vessel at a good clip past famous old castles like the picturesque Marksburg near Koblenz. The Drachenfels, a mountain where the legendary Germanic hero Siegfried slew a dragon, appears in the distance as the Stadt Monheim glides north. Helga, Distel's 47-year-old wife and sole crewmember, carries a tray with vegetable soup, wurst and pudding up the outside iron staircase to her husband from their living quarters on the rear deck.

It's just another work day for the Dis-tels, who consented to take an Associated Press reporter on board for the day on the stretch in central West Germany. The Distels are still enraptured by the Rhine River's landscape even though it is a normal part of their daily lives. But this is clearly not the life for anyone. "It is not what most people would call an easy life we're under way 14 hours a day, sometimes 10 days straight, and we're never surwhen Distel does a lot of the strenuous mechanical work on his year-old Stadt Monheim named after a Rhine River town near Cologne. And he oversaw the mammoth job a few years ago of replacing the original engines for smaller but more efficient ones.

Like other barge families, the Distels own a thoroughly modernized vessel loaded with domestic conveniences. Their living quarters consist of a carpeted living room," -a complete kitchen, ia bathroom with a show-er and washing machine, and a large bedroom. Most of the Distels' travels are on the Rhine, but their contracts with various companies take them up and down other rivers as well, such as the Neckar and Mosel. Living on the river also has its dangerous side, and families can face financial ruin from running aground and other accidents. But Helga Distel says they've been fortunate and attributes that to her husband's navigational skill and understanding of the river.
