THE DAILY OKLAHOMANTIMES Monday, September 10, 1964 2i Franco Helps Seattle By Just Being There McEnroe Hones His Magic Act NEW YORK (AP) John McEnroe, winner of his fourth U.S. Open tennis championship, believes he can raise the level of his game even higher. After wiping out Ivan Lendl in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 Sunday, McEnroe said, "I've gotten better this year and I feel I can get better than that. I think I'm getting better with my serve and my groundstrokes. I'm moving better staying away from injury." Playing less than 18 hours after winning a five-set semifinal match against Jimmy Connors, McEnroe said that he hoped he could win Sunday's title in a hurry.

"I feel exhausted, unbelievable and terrible at the same time," he said. "In the third set, my body said, 'That's He (Lendl) looked bad himself." Lendl, too, had played a five-set semifiaal on Saturday, defeating Pat Cash of Australia. He was unable to handle McEnroe, failing to break the New Yorker even once in the match. Earlier this year, McEnroe had won the firsttwo sets in the finals of the French Open against Lendl but then dropped the next three and the title- match. Asked if he was concerned about that happening again, McEnroe said the different surface at the U.S.

Open prevented that. "He wasn't going to have time to hit passing shots here like he did there," McEnroe said. The Deco-Turf surface at Flushing Meadow is considerably faster than the clay on which the French Open is played in Paris. McEnroe, even after his victory Sunday, dwelled on the marathon match he won against Connors Saturday night. All Lendl Needed Was Breaker Two NEW YORK (AP) Ivan Lendl, swept away John McEnroe in straight sets Sunday in the men' finals of the U.S.

Open, said there was little more hi could have done against the champion. "I thought I was hitting the ball well," said Lendl "but in order to beat him, you liave to returiCJiti serve and break him." "Since I didn't break him. Lendl did not break service once in McEnroel'6 4, 6-3, 6-1 victory. He felt McEnroe did little different from pas matches, only did it better. Lendl said McEhroi jammed him often when serving.

"He has always been doing that. He is just nov serving a little deeper, especially on the seconi serve." Only once did Lendl come close to breaking McEnroe. He had a double break point in the sec ond game of the second set, but a potential winning shot just failed. "I hit a good passing shot that hit the tape and just bounced over and he hit a winner on it," Lend! said. "Until then I really had no chances." Unlike this year's French Open, in which Lend lost the first two sets before rallying to victoryi things went from bad to worse in the third set.

Lendl did not use fatigue from his five-set semifinal victory over Pat Cash Saturday as an excuse for the lopsided third set or his defeat. "When I woke up this morning I felt much better than I thought I would," Lendl said. Like McEnroe, Lendl said the difference between Sunday's match and the French Open lay mainly in the DecoTurf surface at Flushing. Is McEnroe the No. 1 in the world right now? "Yes, I would say so," Lendl said.

CLIP SAVE- Warner with a season-ending knee injury in the Seahawks' regular season opening victory over Cleveland. He was a contract holdout with the Steelers this season and had not played since last Jan. 1. He only practiced two days with the Seahawks this week and didn't start Sunday. Reggie McKenzie, a 13-year NFL veteran and a member of the Seahawks' offensive line, pointed out Harris brought a huge amount of charisma when he came into the Seahawks' huddle for the first time.

"He said, 'All right, let's go," McKenzie said. "You can bet, we all listened to him. "I'm glad he's on the team. It was a great move. We're right back in the Super Bowl hunt." The Seahawks, with Warner leading the AFC in rushing as a rookie, reached the AFC title game last season.

The gigantic loss of Warner created a lot of questions. The soft-spoken Harris said he expected to make "a bigger contribution" for the Seahawks in New England next Sunday. "I have a full week of practice this week," he explained. "I'm going to be a lot more acclimated. I also have a lot of uncertainties out of the way now.

Now, I can just concentrate on playing football." When Harris wasn't playing, he was pacing the Kingdome sidelines. "I guess I was probably more nervous than I have been for awhile," he said with a small laugh. "I didn't know how much I could contribute." Chuck Knox, Seattle's head coach who decided Harris would help his club, noted that his new running back only had two days of practice and "he still is not familiar with our offense. "But he helped us on the field and his presence helped us, too. He's very definitely going to help our football team." SEATTLE (AP) Franco Harris, who earned four Super Bowl championship rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers, said he learned a lot about his new National Football League club Sunday.

"Things really didn't get off very fast, did they?" Harris asked rhetorically. "But when we got behind, we really showed the true character of the team. "I didn't lose any confidence in the team and it didn't lose any confidence in itself, either." Compared to some of the legendary Harris' feats with the Steelers in Pittsburgh, his performance Sunday was strictly pedestrian. But there was a huge smile on his bearded face in the Seahawks dressing room following a come-from-behind 31-17 victory over' the San Diego Chargers in a battle of two American Football Conference West contenders. When Harris made his first carry for the Seahawks, a six-yard gain over left tackle late in the opening quarter, they trailed the Chargers, 10-0.

"I was thinking about not fumbling," admitted the NFL's No. 2 all-time career rusher. "I didn't know how much I could help the team but I didn't want to hurt them." Harris, 34, joined Seattle as a free agent Wednesday after surprisingly being placed on waivers by the Steelers on Aug. 20. He signed a one-year contract that reportedly will bring him $500,000 plus, including incentives, this season.

He gained 46 yards on 14 carries in his Seahawks' debut, giving him 11,996 yards in his 13-year NFL career and moving him to within 317 yards of breaking Jim Brown's NFL rushing record. "I want to help Seattle as much as ean," Harris said. "This is a team that wants to go all the way to the Super Bowl. I want to help them get there." Harris was signed following the loss of star running back Curt AP Lawrphoto John McEnroe enjoys a happy moment after defeating Ivan Lendl for the men's singles title at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships in New York Sunday.
