The only other sophomores to win the rushing championship were Wake Forest's John Polanski in 1939 and Harclin-Simmons' Rudy Mobley in 1942. Plenty of Experience Eddie Joost, recently named manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, has a factor in his previous experience as a manager that makes an interesting story. He was a manager for one day rnd the game was rained out. Burleigh Grimes was manager of in the International League in 194(5 when Joost led IL r'-orts. '')s in fielding, drove in 101 runs and hit 19 home runs.

Grimes had a temper as fast as his spilter had been when he was fc.ired by National League batters in the 20's. and as a result was ortcn banished from the game by IL umpires. He appointed Joost as stand-in, and that made Joost the logical candidate for field boss when a decision was made to drop Grimes about a month before the season ended. "We were in Jersey City, waiting for a night game." re- railed. "Joe Ziegler, our general manager, came in and told the fellows that since Grimes was out.

I was acting manager." But Joopt never had the chance to act. The night game was rained out, and by next game time. Benny Borgmann. lifted from scouting staff, arrived to take charge, i But if Joost cannot take actual managerial experience into his job as manager of the Athletics, he can bring a world of kindred baseball experience. He started in organized baseball in 1933 for the San Francisco Missions, and moved through Omaha.

Syracuse, Kansas City, Cincinnati. Boston, Rochester and Philadelphia. He played under 14 managers and if he can combine their assorted skills and knowledge the Athletics might be a power in the 1354 pennant race. Gabby Street, Charley Dressen. Bill McKechnie, Casey Stengel.

Connie Mack and Jimmy Dykes were managers from whom a bright and apt pupil might learn some baseball savvy. The biggest problem that Joost has to face is the need of a winning club and a "thin red line" of players with which to maneuver victories. Gossipers already spread tales the Athletics might not be in Philadelphia in 1S54 or 1955. said he plans to build around Bobby Shantz. Harry Byrd and Alex Kellner.
